Default Badgers

Well its about time. I spotted a badger in the area almost 3 weeks ago. I have had some sets out for a while and haven't had a sniff. Caught that pesky gopher in the 330. My bro and I found a fresh dig site where he dug up a gopher about 1.5 foot down and ended. So perfect for holding bait. So threw a couple gophers down the hole and placed a 330 over it and tied off to a steak.

Congrats on that Badger Bill. We really don't see that many up here. I still have one in the freezer ready to be tanned and euro'd

This wasn't the big one I saw around the area. But I'm sure there is more the fresh holes are a good tell tale. These badgers are getting smarter they are rarely scene out in the field. Cause if they are spotted usually someone is shooting at them. I'll keep you all updated.
Cheers

when you said that you placed the trap, over the hole,or in the bottom of the hole? was it covered or just suspended by the ground level around the top .... just curious?
p.s, nice animal!

I actually dig down so the trap was level with the ground and the springs are dug in as well and are covered with dirt so they are ground level. I try and place the 330 at a 90degree angle to the angle of the hole. So if the hole was straight down then I'd lay it right across. But it is rare tto find a hole straight down. Kind of like setting 330s for beaver on their runs. I have also found that badgers aren't shy of metal 330s. I don't have every bit of metal covered. The springs and the top by the dog. If you really spent the time to dig in the 330 perfectly I'm sure it wouldn't hurt. I personally am Leary of covering up the whole trap. I don't like my hands in the strike zone. Also steak and run a cable to the trap. They are tough. Hope this answers any questions. If there is a better way please let me know.

Have a friend at a local colony here in SW alberta who catches a lot of badgers. 34 just this spring alone. Had a top lot in the last auction. Uses 5/64 cable coyote snares almost exclusively. Obviously very successfully. Does not travel very far, said furthest apart catches were only about 5 miles.

I assume he is snareing them in a bait hole. Does he run snare steaks? Also how does he keep the snare supported. Does he have problems with gophers knocking the snare down? Thanks for the post I would like to try snareing badgers. I was taught with the 330 method but its always good yo learn more.
