Youth model
My wife has a Savage 11, got the dealer to put a youth stock on it (at no extra charge). Took off the package scope and fitted it with a 3-9 Burris. She shoots it very confidently and for the money it's a nice little rifle. All in I think we spent about $650 on it.

6.5 x 55
That is what I started my kid on. Mainly because I could afford it ($100 at the time). It was a Karl Gustaf military rifle that I don't think had ever been fired. He now owns lots of guns, but he still has that one, it was/is sub moa at 200M.
It has light recoil and the Swedes shoot moose with it.

They do shoot moose with it, however they don't have nearly the opertunity to shoot longer ranges as we have in North America. I would say shooting a moose is definatly possible with the 6.5 swed but it's not an ideal cartrige for it.

I have more than a few friends who use the 6.5X55 as their primary big game rifle for moose and deer, and my main rifle is also a 6.5X55.
I've shot that cartridge for many years and have killed lots of game with it.
Moose go down with no problem, especially using the big 158's and 160's in it.

Fair enough, I never said it woulden't work though. I just personaly would not consider it an "ideal" cartrige for larger game applications. Deer sized game on the other had this would be my caliber of choice (like the .260 though myself).

I actually believe it is a class of ideal cartridges along with the .260, 7X57, 708, 308, etc.
In short, the shorter, less powerful style cartridges between the 6.5 and 7mm range that are easy on recoil yet can deliver a decent sized bullet to the vitals.

That's very interesting, Cat. Very interesting. And I've taken note of that string of cartridges you just mentioned for future use.

On the 7x57 note have you ever tried the 8x57mm? I have looked at this and kind of want to give it a try. I like the 7x57 and the 8x57 doesn’t seem to lose much going up the 8mm bullet however with the short case you don't gain much either on the short case. Still it kind of intrigues me. Didn't Remmington chamber this in their classic model 700 at one time?

30-06
30-06 with reduced loads that you can buy. You dont even have to reload them. That is what a young lady (14 at the time) started with.
