Default Beginner looking for some help

Hey everyone,

Having fished since I was three years kid, I finally decided to take up fly fishing. I have a 5-6 wt NXT combo and was wondering what flies I should pick up for fishing the Bow near Rolling Hills. As far as I know, the only species in the area that would take a fly are Goldeye and Pike. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Joe

If you are targeting the pike and goldeye. I use streamers and leach patterns. Black and anything with a bit of flash. Size from 2-6 inches. I like weighted flies with floating line keeps me mid water column in most spots. Experiment with anything on the bigger and flashy side and you should do well. In Manitoba we use minnows for the golds or white spinner dry flies and hammer them all evening till your arms are sore. Have fun and sorry about the addiction you are about to have. Lol pike on the fly or anything on the fly for that matter and I'm betting your spinning gear is gonna get awful dusty. Good luck!!!!

If you looking to get into fly fishing, I would consider whitefish as a target. Where you live there are lots of Reservoirs filled with them, Lake Newell is loaded. If you do a search in the fishing and fly fishing sections of this board there are a few recent threads on how to fish them.

Make sure to get some grasshopper patterns for the river, on a windy day during grasshopper season, it is a laugh a minute.
