Default Whats the going rate for apples given ?

Our neighbor is giving us all the apples off there Mac tree. We should be picking in a couple of weeks. What would the rate be for them?
If we make 10 pies, how many pies should we give them for the apples ?

max 15%- 20% as you are the one incurring all of the costs and labor

I just dropped off apple wine made last fall from a neighbors tree.
Yielded 29 750ml bottles
I gave them 5 bottles.
I picked and cleaned and raked their yard of all rotted windfall and leaves.
Probably 3 hours work , plus wine costs-sugar-bottles-corks , caps and labels and a year of brew time-about 20 hours labor-juicing-washing-cutting blossom ends and destemming-scrubbing bottles-filling- pectic enzyme costs-yeast nutrient-Malic acid additions, gelatin finings-sparkaloid-etc etc
They were thrilled after tasting and insisted I come back. I politely declined-way more work than it was worth.

They seemed a bit confused and hurt as to why I was not jumping at the chance for more FREE apples.

hmmm...one and a half pies?

They are your neighbors. Are they good friendly neighbors with an apple tree? If you make 10 pies give them 3 or 4. Apple pie for everyone. If they didn't give you the apples they could be making apple pies and not sharing any. Or letting them fall on the ground to rot. And no pie for anyone.

That was generous. I can see why they want the same deal.

I give mine away, I have the same people come for them every year. This year they actually cleaned up the windfalls, which I thought was nice. I've never asked for anything and have never received anything. Always say they will make me a pie, they say that every year......still waiting for a pie...lol.

Well now you've learned .....

NO SUCH THING AS FREE APPLES !!!!

Omg - you did more than I would have been prepared to do - that's for sure.

On the bright side - you can be my neighbor any day - I have lots of tools you can borrow and will be planting fruit trees the day you move in !!!

Depends completely on circumstances. If I was seeking the apples, then only fair I do more to cement the relationship and provide many tiers above simple mutual benefit(how I run my companies)
But I was approached and relented in the interest of being a good neighbor.

I do believe strongly in developing exceptional relationships and a sense of community with my neighbors-even more rewarding to me if they are elderly or infirm

I always figured that the nice thing about giving apples away was having a yard without smushed apples all over the place. I never thought about it any other way.

The Mennonites have been ripping me off! I want pie!

But, they do the picking. Does that change things?

Id be happy that someone was making use of the extra apples, if they felt so compelled to give me a pie or two it would be much appreciated but I would hate for them to feel 'forced' to share.

X2, I am happy just to be rid of them. Anything extra from a neighbor is a bonus.....Same with rhubarb.

I use the common core math to calculate the split.

I pick a bunch of sour cherries and some apples from a friend's place in town.
She would not bother with any of it. I dropped an apple pie off and she was happy.

I also dropped a five gallon of cherries at one of my neighbours. She came over with a box of stuff from her garden cukes carrots etc.
I dropped five gallons off at another neighbours and she gave me two five gallon pails of green beans. The beans are excellent and in the freezer now.
I gave a bottle of Forty cream to a neighbour for helping me change a switch in my well. He insisted we go over and play cards and drink it.

I like living in the country.

A gift is a gift. No strings attached.

Give what is in your heart to give.

One pie max...

I asked my grand son's math teacher to look at this and she says purple is the wrong anser. The correct answer is Lime Green aperantly, because they like to hang out with Kermit.

I believe the neighberly rate is one pie, there is no going rate that I am aware of, but a generous soul might wish to send one pie to a poor lonely trapper.

Bodo ran all things orange out of town.
Its easy enough to do when your town has no traffic lights.

How do you feel about it?
Do you feel that your neighbors got ripped off?

Are you in a hurry to pick more FREE apples?

This is more a question of enjoyment. Are you gonna bake some pies and want some apples. Sort of like the free deer you go hunt. If you want to do up some pies or wine and prefer to harvest rather than purchase...there are no losers here.

We might give them one more pie.
No more apples for us this year. Got 24 pies in the freezer. The two kids will get a few each and my mother a couple over the winter so that should leave us with a bakers dozen to eat. Hot apple pie and icecream !
