Default Might be a dumb question

A buddy shows me his Mauser action rifle and on the barrel it is stamped 7.92. Full wood stock, volley sites - rifling looks in good shape etc. He shows me the box of ammo he was given when he purchased it (private sale) and it is 8x57 soft point Yugoslavian ammo. Box has a picture with crosshairs on a deer.

I do some research and Everything I see online is contradictory some sites says it's the same some not. Is he safe to use this ammo? And secondly, will this ammo likely be smokeless or corrosive?
