If you took a moment to read the article or any others, you would have seen that it specifically refer's to Gray wolves (our type) while the smaller Red Wolf (the eastern ones) are yes smaller. Here's another one for you...

The gray wolf of North America includes several subspecies: the white arctic wolf, the red wolf of the southwest, the grey timber wolf of the eastern forests, and the big western wolf. Alberta can boast some of the largest and most handsome of all wolves, which belong to the Canis lupus occidentalis group.

In my own experience, Wherever you found wolves, deer is around the corner. Wolves won't stay where there is no prey.

I see quite a few deer in 314 just driving the main road thru water valley. I think there is quite a few more deer than you realize. Take a drive just at break of light will see alot. Well i dont have permission in 314 to get off a roadway as its all private or private owned grazing lease. We seen a nice tall 5x5 whitey and 4x4 in the same field on monday. People told me 316 is dead as well. I can say 316 still has moose and deer in it as well. Yes wolves in 316 too.

Read the article above your post. It’s all about that.

Wolves kill for pleasure and teaching purposes for the younger ones in the pack. One year in late march a very large pack of wolves took down 19 deer on a large lake over a 2 day period and that's all I found on the lake with a very good chance more were down in the bush .2 wolves can take down a deer because I have seen it.

I week later after this I was fishing and not more than 1000 yards away and least 25 wolves in 3 groups of 8 crossed in front of my truck in ontario, then I realize the gravity on the damage to the deer population a pack this large can do.

I have been hunting wolves for some 40 years and in the past 10 years I never seen the explosion of the size of packs and the depleting of wildlife.

This will take 50 years to turn itself around if it can and the good genetics will take twice as long or longer to rebuild itself again if even possible.

If the locals are to lazy to hunt them then get guides to bring in hunters and do there thing, myself I will take what I can legally and then take guys out and keep the process going.

Without intervention from people, it will never turn around. IMO, the only reason we had great hunting during the 80's and 90's was because of the extermination efforts during the 60's.

Wow. If Talking Moose's post doesn't make me dislike wolves even more. I don't want wolves gone - but they need some definite intervention right now.

Here is hoping my wolf hunting is prosperous !

Cougars are deer specialists. Ambush attack with little energy used. A couple of cougars would be harder on your deer herd than a pack of wolves IMO. A mother with cubs probably kills one every other day when the cubs are little and maybe even one a day as they near maturity.
Sorry but you are still kidding yourself, deer are easy pickings for wolves and coyotes.
Deer are sprinters/canines are marathon runners.
A WT deer usually only runs a few hundred meters to escape danger, they don’t have the stamina to outdistance the relentless pursuit of a wolf pack, and even if they do escape for now, their lungs aren’t built for long distance running and they can catch nemonia and die when harassed by not only wild canines but domestic dogs allowed to run at large. In NB at least,a dog running deer will be shot on sight by the Game Wardens and many hunters take it upon them self to end their deer running days as well.
Wolves annhialated a favourite area of mine a few years ago, mild winter in between deer seasons and it went from loaded with deer one year to barely a track to be found the next when the wolves moved in.
Good news is,deer are not moose and can repopulate an area exponentially quicker the moose,so no,it won’t take 20 years as speculated in a previous post.

Yup. Wolves will just plain run it down until a deer can’t even move. Relentless.
