The only thing less glamorous than a jig is a plain hook and a chunk of lead. Not promoting some fancy gaget here, quite the oposite, I'm questioning how much of an evolutionary step up the jig is from a regular hook and sinker. With a jig instant hook sets are often required, sometimes you need a 1/2 oz jig to make good contact with the bottom but the fish only want to hit a slower falling 1/4 oz jig. With any other rig your chunk of lead has very little to do with how your bait moves so it can be as heavy as you want, rigged properly you have all day to set the hook, the only downside is it takes a little longer to rig up.
