Im excluding bait, otherwise I would have to add maggots and smelt/minnow in there somewhere.

The one item I can't live without is a
VMC Spinshot. The perfect dropshot hook for open water walleye and pike and killer for whites and perch through the ice. Tip it w/maggot or waxie, tie on a Gold Bell (Thumper) 12" below and hold on!
Cheers.

I'm not skilled enough to catch fish on lures so my list would be:
1 - Baited jig
2 - Baited treble
3 - baited pickerel rig
4 - baited vertical Rapala
5 - baited hook
My only proven theory is "Whatever you're using, it'll work better with bait"

x2,
#1 Silver and green #3 swedish pimple
#2 small teardrop tied 6" above the Pimple dropshot style
With #1 and #2 one could probably catch anything that swims in alberta.
#3 00 size 5 of Diamonds
#4 1/3 oz Little Cleo, Blue and silver
#5 baited #4 trebble hook with a bead above it.

I don't really have a top 5 because I pretty much use the same two or three different lures:
Glow jig with smelt
Small hooks with maggots for whitefish
Wetaskiwin specials

Home made fluro-carbon bait rig, with a nice juicy smelt - for pike of course.
1/64oz jig heads in white - for perch/shiners/whites/rainbows/brookies
Mepps Syclops is sometimes decent for attracting the fish.
Tiny tube jigs for rainbows
I mostly go for pike with the fluro rig so thats about it. I've got a nice perch pattern jigging spoon that works sometimes.

Just curious about the rampant popularity of jigs. IMO they arent even a lure, just two componants of a standard bait rig combined, just like a bait rig they are only as good as what you put on them. While they are conveniant to tie on and fish, most other methods of fishing bait or plastic will give you more time to set the hook and you can use as much weight as you need without changing the action of your bait. I do use jigs simply because they are conveniant to tie on but I've never understood their huge following, am I going to hell?

I agree.
Jigs are like ketchup. It's what you use when you don't know there is something better.
I use an octopus hook and split shot more often than a jig, but if I'm at spray, a small white jig and stinger gets the job done.

Wrong. There is nothing better than ketchup... a little friction reducer makes anything go down easier.

I never had a pike bend a gamagatsu open, but jigs are notorious for it.

I think the unifying tool here is the hook.
Hooks catch fish, no two ways about it.
