Pike aren't all that fussy most of the time, if it looks like something they want, they hit it. Consider that people use wire leaders on them and catch plenty of them, those fish are not blind, just hungry, or not hungry, although they can also be irritated into a strike. Tried all sorts of stuff on them on one trip where we could sight fish them in 5-10ft of good clear water. Ones laying flat, had to get it close, like 6", or even drag it across their nose. If they were angled head up, all they needed was to see it, they'd hit it at 6ft away. These were all fish down on the bottom. There were about 8 of us in 4 boats(?) lined up taking turns to cast to a fish, all kinds of leaders and flies. It was interesting, most were 28-32", could see anywhere from 5 to 25 fish at a time on the bottom in various spots.
