Default 509

Hi guys,

I just lucked into some land in 509. 2 miles from the river and 2 miles from crown land. Any advice on what I expect to encounter?

Thanks ,

Keep healthy y’all!

Lots of elk and deer there, there’s moose but there doesn’t seem to be e very high population of them. There are some really big bull elk up that way and some really nice whitetails too.

Prime time elk country. Numbers are growing in 509 and the quality of bulls is very good. They move around a lot so you can bet at some point they'll be through there!

Starting to cool off at night up there.

Can anyone confirm or deny grizzly bears along the north side of the Athabasca River near the Alpac Bridge?

I’ve seen grizzly tracks by wondering river north of there and by Vega south of there, so by all means I would say there are grizzlies there.

Best advice I can give regarding grizzly bears they are where ever they choose to be and don’t listen to where man thinks they should be. When you hear there is no grizzly in an area it just means the odds of running into one is really low but not impossible

I have found grizzly in all kinds of places they “should” not be

Sweet get on the area. Permission is hard to get there. A friend has 160 acres of bush yet the elk only come through sporadically. They seem to be always on the move there and go nocturnal too. I hear lots of guys bow hunt that zone for them big boy elk. Come Nov the roads come alive lol. Lots of Elk and WT, some bruisers out there.

Good luck

Watch for wolves also.

Kindly take one (or several) if you can, the numbers seem very high in the 509/511/516 areas.

Yep, lot's of wolves north of the Athabasca river, so I suspect that is why the elk are extra transient. I have wolves on trail cameras in farm country, but mostly night pictures. They come and go looking for those elk as much as us hunters do, and I suspect have more luck than we do or they wouldn't keep coming back. My son killed a wolf on crown land not far from farm country in 509 while hunting for whitetail in late Nov last year. I shot two wolves last winter, one on Boxing Day (way better than shopping in the big city) one in mid January, both up in big bush of 511. I hunt a bit on farm land but mostly big bush, and I have found with the high wolf numbers, it means low big buck numbers. They get hammered after the rut by those hungry dogs.
