That would freaking suck ......... you would be trying to stuff all the fish back down the hole just as the conservation officer pulls up to see you and your buddy with 100 fish on the ice !!!!!
Try explaining that one ..... lol.

The fish are right under the ice because of severe winterkill and that is the last water with Oxygen. The fish are coming up because of that as the surface exchange is providing oxygen in the water.
This happened 3 years ago where dinkers would come up to the top of the hole in March and the fish were right under the ice.

It looks more like Frank Lake near High River. Last week I was there and drilled a hole and fish started pumping out of it. Mostly big bull trout, but there were a couple of nice lake trout in there too.

I wish this never happens. Long winterkill story short, there's no 0xygen in the water and the aquafier rises to basically the bottom
Of the ice and ya..not a good thing at all. Seen it happen, not to that extent however.
Edit: drewski Canuck beat me to it

and the Bucket Brigade strikes again!
Reminds me of fishing spring Crappie in Ontario. No matter the size, into their buckets they go.

We had a creek that ran behind our house at the farm, and it used to be loaded with minnows (35yrs ago). In the winter we would take the axe and chop holes in the ice to water cattle. The creek had a spring in it, so if you would just cut a small hole the pressure from under the ice would force a stream of water about 6-8 inches high and many minnows would be forced out also. Nobody in our family fished back then, I wish they were still there, would make some fine bait. Could be the same sort of thing happening in there??
