I was just telling a buddy (2 hrs ago) this coming week-end will be alot of trucks breaking through.

Alot of people have the mentality, that the ice is always safe for truck travel between xmas and new years. Especially with the warmer weather coming alot of guys will be out.

This year is not a normal year for ice....i expect to see alot of pic's like these by monday...

x2 if you do take the vehicle on the ice drill holes first to see how think the ice is, keep windows down and doors unlocked.

Good advice about doors unlocked and windows down a bit.... drilling test holes as well, but do keep in mind that ice can vary alot with-in a 100 yrds. I've seen it first hand at the S.L narrows, pretty much needed an extention for the auger and moved 100 to 200 yrds over and there was less then 1 and 1/2 ft of ice.

Drill test holes people.

That said i first drove on December 1st at moose it had 11 inches of clear black ice.

Ice can very from lake to lake. Amisk has scary soft bad ice thats 11 inches. Northbuck which is 20 minutes away has 15.5 inches of solid ice.

The early snow cover is the issue. We have had more than enough cold weather but the snow is an insulator.

Conditions at Snipe have been pretty variable this year. I was out end of November, 4 groups out on the ice, 2 people broke through right beside where we all walked on and walked off. From what I can tell, the ice has sunk and flooded twice so far this year on Snipe.

Was out there today, accessed by the east side of the lake, looked like someone broke through right at the launch. Cut a hole 75' off shore in 5' of water and only had 2" black and 6" of white. Went out another 50' and it was 2" black and maybe 4" of white. One trailer shack was brought out today by side by side and skidoo.

The first attempt at removing the truck from the lake was unsuccessful.

Yikes...they usually use tractors on snipe until it breaks through, then another tractor til it breaks through and so on...lol

Hey just a quick question Fishergirl...not to be rude but its a pet peeve of mine....were you laying on your side when you took the pic, or is there another reason why you would turn your camera a 1/4 turn ? Just curious, as i hate turning my laptop like a book....lol. I even started a thread in the general discussions about it...

I'm guessing she took it with an iPhone, because that's how most people take pictures are taken

Was unable to download picture and rotate for proper orientation. Internet is acting up. Was just easier to post directly from phone to forum. Have tried posting a picture should have "normal" orientation but now it's upside down. Any ideas on how to fix it

that'd be a fight to get them to cover going through the ice wouldn't it?

That's correct. When I take pics it's usually with my iPhone. For some reason when I email the pictures it shows up 1/4 turned on the recipients end.

X2 on drilling test holes. I pack my cordless drill and a 3/8 x 18 inch deep auger bit. I'm ultra paranoid about sending my truck and gear to the murky depths of a lake.

If I see someone with a similar truck on the ice where I'm going, I feel marginally better. But it's 4x4 high and under 10 km/h.

OP,

That's too bad about the truck. Hopefully it is recovered soon.

Does insurance cover it if a guy goes through the ice like that? I would assume they would not?
