So I am just getting into ice fishing and have heard some good things about hermitage pond for rainbows. I am wondering if I have better chances there than at the fort sask. Pond because I have never caught a fish at that pond. I was using a jig head with a maggot on the hook. So I am wondering what kind of setups I should be using for rainbows and if people have good success at hermitage.
Welcome to the fishing community, I can't speak for hermitage or fort sask in
the winter. But if your looking for hook and bait for trout, try using smaller hooks like a Swedish pimple, kastmaster, or demon beetle lure. Tip them with small shrimp pieces, and fish the bottom of the lake working your way up. Get maybe a fishing guide to help locate surrounding lakes and try some of these ponds/reservoirs around Edmonton.

Well I ice fished twice at the beginning of winter at Hermitage. Each time I had bites and caught a nice size fish. Problem is Hermitage is not aerated so it might have winter killed by now. It's ok until about Christmas. The Fort is aerated so it doesn't winter kill as far as I know. Your best presentation would be a very tiny (size #14 ) hook (treble if you want to keep the fish) with small piece of meal worm or those small trout worms. If that fails try just hiding the hook in a small ball of trout dough (chunky cheese is best). Always works for me! Hope this helps.

Since the beginning of Jan. I have fished Herm once, but have been on the ice talking to other anglers about 10 times. I live close to there so whenever I see someone on the ice I walk out and ask them how there doing. I have talked to about 20 people at different times and NOT ONE fish has been caught or even heard to be caught. There might be the odd fish left in there but it is pretty well dead.
I always wondered about ice fishin that pond... Seemed a good place to get me and the ol lady's feet wet, or frozen if you prefer, as ice fisherman. We ended up at east pit. Im not sure about the stocking program, as I read from the govt site the fish were only up to 10 cm. I did, however, catch a solid 12" bow out of there this summer on the fly early june. So, they either winter to get that big, or there are a few biggins dropped in with the stockers. I put him back, so good luck. Having snowshoed the area alot I talked to a couple once, and two seperate individuals and they said not even a bite.
