No elk hair caddis?
I love my elk hair caddis flies, catch trout, easy to tie, always stay dry.
Too bad they didn't make your list. If I had to give up either a hopper, which I love or the Caddis which I need it would have to be the hopper.
Good list though.

My #1 favourite fly is the Chernobyl Ant. It looks ridiculous, doesn't imitate anything... and works!
I've been frustrated on numerous occasions getting all kinds of looks and follows and no hits. Then I switch to the Chernobyl and WHAM!
I haven't tried it in a lake yet - only streams.

That may be so. Last summer they were working and there were hoppers everywhere. I tried a hopper with similar foam construction to Chernobyl and they didn't like it. Maybe the back and fluorescent orange looks more like a hopper to a fish than the hoppers do?

Dont forget the H&L varient size 14. Great fly for trout. Easy to tie.
It floats high on the water. I never leave home without a few of these...Even if im not fishing.

What about klinks?
Wow,23 responses and not a mention of Klinks??
FH7's 1st post is a great list, but I find it hard to beleive anybody could compose a Top 10 list for trout and omit muddlers?Re;floating muddlers,I hate casting weighted/beadhead flies etc.,so I trim my muddlers kinda sparse, they will sink once they are waterlogged enough or dress them with Xink if you have to get them down."Standard",full dressed muddlers are great on a sink-tip,and many muddler variations make a good hopper imitation when fished dry.

love my mosquito. works year round and am never skunked with it. if you can figure out how to get it to dance and skim along on top of the water you will have a huge bite and a fish in minutes.

great list for must haves....but one is missing. if i only had one fly for a day of fishing it would be a small black gnat....preferrably a firetail. mosquito probably a second choice.
