I don’t really follow hockey, and to my mind the Olympic has devolved into a contest of nations whereby the country with the most medals gets bragging rights. Fine, I suppose, but I had always thought that the Olympics was a gathering of the world’s finest AMATEUR athletes. Colour me naive, I guess.

In 1986, professional athletes were given permission by the International Federation to compete in each sport of the Olympic Games alongside their amateur counterparts. However, two sports continued to resist the onset of professionalism in the Olympics. These are wrestling and boxing.
