Default Pine coulee kids advice

I'm taking my girlfriend's niece and nephew (8 and 10ish?) to pine coulee tomorrow.

Gonna give them some slip bobbers and circle hooks and let them catch some walleye. I was thinking of just picking up some dew worms, I don't bait fish often. what should I stick on their hooks?

Smelts or minnows would be a good choice. Sounds like you can evencut or break them in half.

It used to be only smelts, I see they changed that and any bait is allowed now.

Cut a minnow in half and have fun!

Minnows are better than smelts

1 tub of minnows is plenty.

Cut them into thirds or less.

You only need a thumbnail sized piece on the hook.

I recommend using pickerel rigs there off the dock with smelts or minnows rather than using a bobber.

I have little to no experience with pickerel rigs.... are they easy to rig and catch fish on?

i've used slip bobbers here before and done well

just tie on a 1/4 ounce jig, any color, add a 1 inch piece of smelt, cast out and let it sit on the bottom, soon as the line moves bring in your fish. repeat

Lol! That's pretty much all you need to know right there. I was out there on Tuesday and used half a smelt or a little piece of hot dog. Worked like a charm plus I got to say "wiener smelt" and laugh because I'm immature like that.

took them out, tried both the slip bobber technique and the jighead with a piece of minnow technique. both fished well and produced

final count was 20 for the 7 year old girl with the barbie rod and 12 for the 10 year old boy using my $120 setup XD

my girlfriend caught 3 without bait (she took pictures most of the time and didn't want to use up the bait)

I caught 19 in between baiting and unhooking the kids' fish.

Girlfriend's sister also caught 12 using bait sometimes and also on a swimbait

I think we are going to have to take their cousins now haha

Did you try your fly rod for them?,,, Worth a try, and also worth bringing some really large white streamers for the pike.
