Default Pigeon lake

What a dump!! I can't believe that someone would even eat the fish from this slough! Got walleye tags and come here for the week. No prob catching but the water is littered with dead whites. Wondering how come?

Lol that's common, it has something to do with oxygen levels, welcome to central alberta lakes!

There was a thread about a week ago about it with some links to stories. Talked to f&w when we were there and got told basically the same story. Lack of oxygen that affects the larger whitefish for the most part. There smaller gills compared to body size was the reason we were given. Sounds like it gets worse later in the summer.

Default Pigeon Whites

Mameo Beach is the worse , was told in the hotter summers in shallow water the Algae dies and goes to bottom and as it rots it needs oxygen to do so , all the oxygen is depleted and the school of whites swim into a dead zone usually at night and die of asphyxiation , seems the summers are getting hotter and there is more Algae growing some of the blame is lawn fertilizer from cottages etc. making the Algae growth rapid . This is getting to be too common unfortunately and to me the summers seem to be getting hotter so we will have to wait and see.

you call this summer hotter?? if you mean hotter than winter, maybe so. lol
the inlet creek is surrounded by farm / grazing land... think that has a lot to do with it as well
cheers

It's been a cool summer so far but LOTS of rain and runoff into the lake so ferts could be getting leached in the water helping the alge. It's started alot earlier this season and seems to already be bad, this could get very ulgly by the end of August

I have heard the walleye population is partially to blame as well. When the whites try to swim deep to cooler more oxygenated water they are chased away by the eyes
