hummingbird 597 internal GPs and windshield

Just wondering if anyone else has had issues with their hummingbird internal GPs being obstructed by windshield? Any fix aside from moving the unit?

Can you put an external antenna on it?

I am surprised that you are having trouble. Most GPS units these days will get a fix inside a house, let alone a boat.

An extermal will fit but unsure if it will allow the external or not (lowrance does allow externals effectively as boosters). I'm struggling with this and wonder if somethings not wrong with it as it does seem odd as some boats will have much more obstructing them than a windshield I would think.
