Default Bear down!

I shot a 5'4" sow black bear tonight over my bait. Rebaited the stand yesterday and I got trailcam pics of her already on it last night. I never had a tree stand set up so I sat on the ground against a spruce tree camoed as best as possible. Got to my stand at 3:00 pm, was bored as hell by 5 pm, had a deer walk right up to me and give me a stare down at 6:00 pm, so I figured I was hidden well enough seeing as bears have worse vision then whitetails. At 9:00 pm I could hear sticks snapping every now and then. I look to my right and theres a black shape that just appeared out of nowhere. It stepped out in the wide open broadside with it's nose up in the air down wind sniffing the air. She's too far to my right and looking right in my direction so I can't move my guns position to shoot. I was basically F'ed. Lucky for me the bear stepped behind some brush that gave me time to readjust. I held the crosshairs in the nearest opening and as soon as her shoulder stepped into it I let her have it. A 130 grain Hornady out of the .270 Win rolled her right on her back. I let her have it again and unfortunately hit it's paw and messed up the hide a bit it happens. Got up on her as it was posturing up and shot it a 3rd time in the back. That was that. My first shot was a perfect double lung at 25 yards. The second shot was also 25 yards and the last shot was about 5 feet I sat 6 hours for a bear and have the mosquito bites to prove it, was a boring sit! Was definitely worth it though! Getting the hide tanned, and the skull bleached. I know a guy on this forum who will take the meat so we have the hind quarters in a cooler. Ill post up some trail cam pics but for now heres the field pics. Bear # 2 for me and that .270

^That blue thing in the background is my barrel

Default Trailcam pics

As far as I can tell she was the only bear hitting the bait. I reset the bait and might check it in a week or so just in case theres more activity. How this bear was able to empty my barrel in less than a week is amazing to me lol, I was figuring multiple bears for sure.

Congratulations IceMeister! I also sat in the stand on Friday for 6 hours, and suffered a few bites for good measure. Didn't see a thing all weekend, the wind was really pounding my area, and so were the outfitters...

Congrats on a successful bear season dude!

Thanks for the comments. Just got back from the taxidermists. Bears out of my freezer and possibly ready for pickup near the end of August.

Congrats Moose......is the barrel you are using a 45 gallon drum? If it is, you may have a bigger bear in your bait site.

Default Nice bear!

Looks like winnie the poo had a bad day...

Took three shots? Why not try a higher caliber rifle? like maybe a .338.

Higher caliber not required, my first shot put it right on its back. Other two shots were mercy shots, that bear died in 20 seconds or less.

Thanks, my barrel is indeed a 45 gallon drum and at the time that it was emptied was full of fish, cookies, chocolate and bread. I reset everything so if another bear comes I'll know when I go to check. I'm not taking a second bear anyways, the only reason my baits still out is I haven't had time to clean it out yet.

Great job there Moose, must have been that good Bear bait you had in the barrel...hahahaha. Maybe you and Pops should bring a Bear Steak for the open fire cook out when we head to Cold lake to pound some Lakers.

hahaha thanks, that bait you gave us really did a good job of stinking up the bait site. She seemed to like the protein a lot more then the bread I was feeding her earlier.

This bear was pretty timid so hunting it on the ground wasn't a huge deal, but it's definitely a lot harder not to get busted hunting ground level. Thanks.
