Default Grouse

Sharpies were taking back some range last year in 130, 108 and 112, i saw a few while hunting deer/ducks/partridge etc. Had not see a single one in the 3 seasons prior. Pretty cool to see. Grouse numbers are high especially near Edson and in some of my southern haunts (even sharpies up in the mountains) i checked out this spring and summer. I'm taking my .22 up on my moose hunt, maybe get a few suppers out of the deal.

Talking Grouse in 349

I went out this morning for a couple of hours and saw one ruffie and got the same one.

I think I heard a sharptail call but could have been the lack of sleep....due to excitement.

This is the first time I have done any hunting in about 20 years.....man did I miss it!

I can't wait to get out in the bush again!

I think the NHL season officially kicks off today, so as sure as night turns into day, it won't be long before the leafs start to fall, so I'm lookin' forward to better grouse hunting, guaranteed !!

(I can say that, I'm a closet leaf's fan )

Been out about a dozen times so far. All on foot with my springer spaniel. Hunt's vary from 3 to 6 hours...lots of KM's. Most I have taken is 3. This is surrounding the Bonnyville area. I would say the numbers are down this year. I am no biologist, but wouldnt last winters above average snow and cold temperatures in this area have seriously reduced their numbers??

Grouse in 339 are way down from last year. I had not seen birds like we did last year in 20 yrs had my Son and our 5.5 month old brittany out on Monday tallied up 7 birds last year would have been 20 by noon.

Spent sun-up to sun-down on Saturday in WMUs 164 & 163. NO SHARPTAILS seen, heard or even smelled. Last year, literally saw hundreds! Only flushed 3 flocks of Hungarians.

A few weeks ago I was in my favourite spot in WMU 337. leaves were still up, but flushed a dozen ruffies before the wind came up howling at 2PM and I quit for the day. What a difference!

Went out last Tues with the youngest boy and we bagged 6 in about 2 hrs... Seemed to be as good if not better numbers than last year...

That makes 22 birds in 3 hunts for us... Lookin good...

In 338 or at least where I am they are all over the place. 6 to 7 in a 2 hour hunt after work is not uncommon with 4 to 5 getting away. I say ruffies are doing fine here. Heck even bought a 410 just to add to the excitement of shooting them on the fly versus with the 22 on the ground.
