165/168

Or 180/185 and here the 7mm gets an additional 2” of barrel.

Colour me unimpressed.

Now compare the velocities at 500 yards.

Thanks. So far I’m striking out with Retumbo and H1000. I’ve got some 8133 I’m going to try.
Who’s reamer did you use?

That’s an exceptionally nice rifle.

That’s nothing more then a straw man. Let’s stick with metrics that are relevant to more then a small fraction of one percent of shooters.

I can push 150 gr bullets over 200 FPS faster from the RM. those numbers make a difference.

They are relevant to me, so that is what matters to me.

Well here’s the 168’s head to head. I chose the exact BC and velocities Nosler reported because we can all get “more velocity” then what’s reported “safe”.

I also know you can play with other bullets and skew it more in the 7mm’s favour but I’m still not enamoured by the assumed difference. At 500 yards 152 FPS and 3” of drop doesn’t really mean much to this cowboy. If it matters to you that’s great.

Default Unorthodox bullet choice

This thread made me think of a friend of mine whom I've hunted with for a few years. He has an unorthodox choice of hunting bullet for his 7mm Rem Mag. He uses a Sierra 168gr. Matchking. I know, I tried to tell him that Sierra doesn't recommend Matchkings for hunting, and why, but you'd need to hunt with my friend to understand his madness. First of all, Wes is what you'd call a perenially successful hunter. In his 50's now, Wes has hunted big game every year since he was old enough and has never failed to fill all his tags every year. He's always hunted with the same Savage 111 in 7mm RM. And as far as I know, he's always taken his deer, moose and elk with head or neck shots. Last fall, I witnessed Wes take a decent bull moose from a ranged distance of 450 yards. Said moose collapsed and expired on the spot. I asked Wes where he'd aimed and he said "neck". When we got to the dead moose, there was a thumb sized hole through his neck. His spine was shattered.
Most of us wouldn't attempt a shot like that, but Wes did it with every confidence. He calculated the bullet would drop something like 20". (rifle zeroed at 300 yds.) Wind drift to be about 6". While I disagree with Wes's bullet choice, I'll never doubt his marksmanship. I guess you should stick with whatever works for you.

You can post nosler numbers and crunch this and that, but the truth of the whole deal is some shooters are just natural real good shooters, lots of long hours of practice and getting your brain box to a higher level that many will never understand.

Why is one person so much better all the time more than 99 percent of the other guys. There geared in upstairs almost like a robot to always repeat the same process every time they squeeze that trigger to a higher degree of focus many can never obtain or achieve.

It's like that in many sports where it is one on one the cream always seems to rise to top to the ones who just have it in them.

In a world of 7.7 billion or more people some guys trump everyone year after year,it's no fluke there just that much better and stronger upstairs in doing what they love.

Most shooters shoot to enjoy the sport which is great, but I truly believe that if you get into any sport put 10000 percent into it and sometimes having a coach that knows how to get you there is very important.
Others that can see your mistakes can help in many ways. Not to be the best on the planet, but just being a very decent shooter and better yourself.

Some make it look easy and it is easy when you can just do it without any hesitation.

If your geared right upstairs I don't thing the cartridge has much to do with it,to some yes,but that's all upstairs also.

This is so true.

I went out shooting with a couple of guys this morning out past 1100 yds. Both are great shooters. We walked bullets on to target, made adjustments etc. But, my Mashburn hit right where I aimed out to 600 yards every single time I pulled the trigger. Why? Because I have put almost a full work weeks worth of range time behind it in the last month. It certainly pays off.

I’m not that great of a shot really. I’ve just done it lots and fixed a bunch of screw ups I’ve made along the way to try and get better.
