Best spotter under $1000
Looking for a 60-85mm objective
Range use mainly, out to 500m. (maybe star gazing with the kids)
Under $1000
Am I crazy to think I can see my groups on paper with a cheap spotter?

You need a high quality spotter, to see bullet holes at 400m. If you use shoot&see targets, you can extend that range.

I looked through one a while back when we were out shooting in the river valley, it was a Vortex Diamond back 20 - 60 x 85mm, it runs about $750 and was great at 700 yards but when we got out to 1200 it was easy to see the difference between it at the leupold, of course the price on the leupold is 3 times that of the vortex. The vortex was not bad out there and would be perfectly acceptable for a budget spotter.

I had a Vortex viper and couldn’t spot shots at a 1000+ yards so got rid of it and bought the razor. Much better quality glass.

Used Kowa 663/664, or a new Pentax 65ED. I really prefer the fixed power eyepieces to make them pop, but the variables have their place.
For shooting steel, farting around looking at stars and nature they are both awesome glass, and not too big to pack around, or require a video tripod to keep steady. Also consider if you want angled or straight, for viewing with other people angled is pretty sweet.

Kowa are excellent for the price, I chose Kowa over Swarovski Zeiss, and Leica. But it could be tough finding one for $1000
