My father fell off a roof about 10 years ago and went through a lot of back surgerys. He was out of commission for some time. He had similar issues with his legs. But after a few surgerys, he was back on the road to recovery. The first few years afterwards were tough. He was very limited in what he was able to do. Now 10 years later is moving around no problems. Back into golfing and fishing. In some of the best shape he has been in in his life.
This can be very difficult on a family and on your brother in law. Everyone needs to be there to support not only him but the entire family. You will all pull through and hopefully his recovery goes similar to my fathers (and he is able to get back out doing the things he loves). It takes time and patience, but he will get there. Stay positive.
