Default 6.5-308 Norma

Does anyone know if a 308 Norma has been necked down to 6.5mm? If so does anyone make dies or have reloading info.

Wouldn't that be pretty much the same as a .264 Win Mag?

It would have slightly greater capacity than the 264. Since the 264 already has more capacity than it needs, it's hard to see the point. Leeper

Why shoot a 300WM over a 308 Norma or short mag. Why shoot a 280 over a 284 or 7mm. There are so many calibers almost the same or so close it really doesn't matter. That's just something different and I like the Norma calibers.

Shorty:
If it blows up yer kilt, then go for it.

I'd expect it would clone the 264WM, and you could probably start with .264WM data to reload for it too.

Let us know how your build goes, and share your range reports too.

Good luck.

I believe it's almost identical to 7mm weatherby mag.

My brother shoots 308 Norma, in a model 70 Pre 64. Brass is really hard to come by. Let alone factory ammo.

If you use that logic then the same goes for 6.5x55 and 260 Rem; 300WM & 300H&H; 375H&H & 375 Ruger, etc.....

OP - If you want something different, have at er. You know it's not going to be cheap. Has it been done before? Probably, there isn't much that someone hasn't done wildcatting but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have fun doing it.

Keep us posted on progress.

If I was going to build a different 6.5 magnum (I'm not), I would be more inclined to go with a 6.5x61 Sharpe and Hart. This would be a cartridge with a little better case capacity for the bore, a longer neck and still have the ability to work with hard-to-find Norma brass if one so desired.
I also like the old Norma magnums and have used a 308 Norma since the early eighties. I think it is the best of the 30 Magnums. As a 6.5, I don't think it would be that great.
A reamer could easily be sourced from Pacific Tool and one could reload using 264 Win Mag dies (the threads make them adjustable!) although they wouldn't size the last bit above the belt. I still think the Sharpe and Hart would make a better cartridge. Leeper

How about a 6.5 Weatherby magnum, the same design as a 257 or 270 Wby round but in 264? Pretty much all Weatherby brass is actually made by Norma anyway.....
