Brian Jean was on the news saying he lost his house, but didn't care he was just concerned about the people of Ft McMurray. I gotta say that he sure sounded like a leader to me.

Listening on 630ched, some people were prepared (packed, ready to go) while others were left scrambling. Goes to show it pays to be prepared.

Preparation is prudent, its not all people paranoid about politics or zombies but realities such as this disaster, floods or even things like the Mt St Helens eruption.

On the other hand, a friend that stuck around at home instead of heading North with the early traffic, left just as 63 South opened, and he is way down 881, while people that went North early on, are stuck North of the city trying to get South on 63. Preparation usually prevails, but luck can trump preparation. Most of my friends started out headed North, but have now turned around and headed South.

I was in the Mac today on a coarse when it all started. Between 11:30-12:00 the wind switched and picked up. You could instantly see the plume of smoke rise up. We cut the class short and headed out about 2:00pm cause it was looking bad. When I passed the shell station on the highway the flames were about 800 yards out. By the time I got near beacon hill the roads were flooded with vehicles and was in gridlock. In my opinion from watching how fast that fire moved they started evacuation orders way to late. When the wind switched they should have evacuated everybody on that side of 63. You could just see a giant wall of bright orange smoke coming strait at Ftmcmurray. Once I got near Suncor the traffic lightened up. People were in a hurry to get from sight to home to try to save belongings and unite with there families which made it dangerous on the road. When I was on the two lane I came close to two head on's when people tried to pass in a panic. Over 80,000 people not sleeping in there homes tonite wondering if they still have one. I felt horrible when I left and I don't even live there but I knew what was coming. Total neighbourhoods destroyed. I still feel horrible.

I hope Notley feels real good about herself for cutting the fire fighting budget back by 25% on an El Niño year like this. It just shows the incompetence.

Two freinds lost everything in the Slave Lake fire. It was real hard on them.

I wish I could do more but all I can offer is a place to stay for a couple or small family.

I know my location and the distance makes it hard but we will do what we can.

I never heard about that and had to look it up.

http://edmontonjournal.com/news/poli...ildfire-budget

With dry conditions and dozens of blazes already burning across Alberta, Premier Rachel Notley said Tuesday her government’s decision to slash the wildfire budget by $15 million this year won’t impact the province’s firefighting efforts.

The province was criticized this week after its budget showed cuts to tanker contracts by $5.1 million and its base wildfire management budget by $9.6 million, to about $100 million.

Wildrose Leader Brian Jean said fighting forest fires is “one of the most important things we can do.”

Forestry “is one of our largest resources here in Alberta,” and should be protected, he said.

Wow...how prescient for him to have said that just 2 weeks ago.

Doesn't look like the cuts go into effect until after Aug 16.

Maybe she will reconsider then after this tragic eye opening event. I won't be holding my breath.

I can't believe that people never learn . Did officials actually think Mother Nature was going to give them a break. Ya, Evacuation should have been ordered 3 days ago. Oh well what's done is done. I still can't believe it's like the first time people have had to deal with forest fires in northern Alberta . I find that the sad part is that it turned into a last minute evacuation. Record low moisture level , hot weather forcast. Only variables missing was wind and wind direction. Well that changed in a hurry. I fought forest fires for ten years so I would say someone was not on the ball.
