Had a visitor at supper time
Just a little guy, but still would not have wanted to meet him in the driveway.

Bear
It's been a bad week for me and the Bears. Just a few days ago on the Crow, I had a big brown sow, with 2 Cubs, jump into the river, about 30 yds. from me.
They did not know I was there, so it was quite the surprise meeting.
Very lucky she did not want a confrontation.had some racing stripes to clean up when I got home.

Nice. Saw a very fresh set of fairly large Blackie prints when the dog and I were out collecting mushrooms today.

I came face to face with a good sized big black bear when walking back through the woods, along a trail, from the river. We both stood looking at each other for about 3-4 seconds - before he took off.
It wasn't that I was brave, or wanted to show him I wasn't scared .... I just froze pending his move. Luckily he was just as scared as I was.
I pretty much power walked all the way back to the truck with my head on swivel. Despite being safe in the truck it was 30 minutes before my heart stopped beating out of my chest and hours before my hands stopped shaking.

Came across black's back in Newfie, never had any issues with them. But, one day I got a damn good scare.
In my teens, I used to trout fish all the time with a friend. We would get off the beaten path, walk for hours and camp out. One day we were on a small pond, catching lots and i'd threw a few keepers by my feet. Tommy was across from me, started yelling at me. I look down and there's 2 cubs by my feet after the fish. The tree line is 500 feet behind me, nothing but tall brush and all I can think is where is mom. Left the fish and booked it around the pond, never did see her but the cubs got a free feed and left. Damn they are cute.

Forestry Rule of thumb for hiking, when berries are good, bad for bears, when berries are not good, still bad for bears.
