Just so people understand on the extreme high price Top Lot cats, you have to have a USA bobcat to achieve the ultra high prices. The Canadian caught bobcats NEVER bring the big bucks!

Two significant sections of bobcats are sold in the Nafa catalogue, "Western Heavy Lynx Cat" and "Canadian Lynx Cat". There are other sections but none of consequence to our western Canadian bobcats.

All the big money for cats goes to cats sold in the "Western Heavy" bobcat section. This is comprised of USA caught bobcats, and every single one of them is identifiable by a state bearing Cities plastic tag in the ear. Canadian cats do not have these tags. The steel Alberta seals do not count.

We do have a very nice bobcat in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and parts of BC, however, for the past 15 years or so, the Canadian caught bobcats end up in the "Canadian" section instead of the "Western Heavy" section where they belong. Many of our cats do belong there, we have exceptional cats!

The "Canadian" section is generally comprised of east coast Canadian cats and our western cats are thrown in there, but very few of the buyers understand that these stunning cats exist in this section and they turn their nose up at them and bid at a reduced level... Always!

Therefore if any folks are feeling a knee jerk reaction to the high top lot price paid for the top lot cats on this sale, and want to over protect our cats from harvest, understand this is not necessary, trappers in Alberta will continue to get a general $500 top for our cats and down from there. Western Canadian cats are identified by the small print "Western" in the "Canadian Lynx Cat Section" but it is truly fine print and few buyers pick up on this.

I apologize for being the bearer of bad news to the trappers!

Also to those confused by the lingo...
When bobcats are sold...
In the auction...

A Lynx is a Lynx...

and

A Bobcat is a Lynx-Cat

hey marty, is there no way the sorters at the auction could be prodded to base the lotting on quality rather than where a cat was caught?

do you have any connections? could you put a thought in someone's mind down there that might have some impact?

I have no stake in this as I don't trap cats, but if the problem isn't mentioned, it will never be changed.

I think Jim would be a great candidate. I'm just a wild fur agent, but I believe he is on the Nafa Wild Fur Shippers Council??? It might mean needing our cats tagged with CITIES tags when they are registered and that could open a whole other can of worms.

I realize that buying the top lot is all about bragging rights and marketing but, if the quality of the fur between US bobcats and Canadian ones were the same, you'd think that the buyers would figure out that they can buy the same quality Canadian bobcats at a discount. Wouldn't that drive the price for Canadian up a bit?
