Default Do you eat your black bear harvest?

That ignorant Calgary sun article got me wondering about "black bear trophies"
I'm curious to see how many people eat their bear.

I am surprised "No" is in the lead. That being said I learned to hunt in BC where you must take black bear meat. Nothing like spring bear sausages for lunch while hunting in the fall. It also makes a pretty good ham, but I don't care for ham from any animal so...

I wouldn't mind going for the meat but here in AB you must not allow the hide to spoil and not really interested in doing anything with it.

I wouldn't vote one way or another as the info might get used by an anti-hunter saying the BB harvest should be stopped. That is only in the slightest possibility meat is getting wasted! AOF is an open forum, but no reason to supply ammo to the anti's.

I took the meat off my bear last year and to be honest I found that it's better than venison. Will be eating a lot more bear from now on.

Default Bear meat

I like bear and I take the meat and the fat.

Here's a fact....when I worked in a certain corporate place I made a big pot of bear stew and I offered it for free. I gave away lots of stew (60bowls?) only one persons said that they didn't like it and most said that they'd eat it again. This coming from a group of people who were ALL non-hunters. We've had this discussion before but I'll repeat it , if you render the bear fat it provides a beautiful white lard that's very nice for pies and pastries as well as being great for soap making.

Rendered bear fat makes great patch lube for shooting round balls with BP muzzleloader.
Dozens of great Atlantic Salmon/Steelhead fly patterns have a black bear hairwing.

I can't vote because I've never harvested a bear yet. I plan on trying for one this spring and I plan on eating it.

Has any one here ever made bear jerky?

I hunt bear for the meat, not much use for the hide anymore as i have a beautiful bear rug and only want, need the one. I take the hide and salt it so it wont waste and donate/gift it to whoever wants it. I have given some to halfords and others as project materials. Bear hide back quiver, fly tying materials and a vest. Takes work to properly skin and salt the hide but the meat is worth it.

The best donuts I ever ate were made with rendered bear fat.

Some of the best jerky I have had has been bear jerky. Sausages are amazing too.

When I was about 10 years old I went to a family friends funeral that died from Trichinosis, it was a long slow Migration of larvae that eventually entered his lungs. I grew up thinking about "Albert died after he ate bear meat" that turned me off trying it. I know now that if properly cooked it's fine to eat I tried some on a fishing trip thought it was good.

Bear ham, when cured properly is lights out better than any pork ham you'll ever taste.

Rendered bear fat makes the best lard for pastries.

The only black bear I ever took was on Vancouver Island. It tasted amazing. Red meat like a cross between beef and pork. Everyone who tried it liked it. I'll be trying for one this spring here in Alberta.

I really enjoy bear, had some at a banquet that was smoked or maybe it was made into ham....either way it tasted very similar to pastrami and did NOT last long. Delicious.

Leaving a bear carcass in the bush is a waste of good meat (providing it is not a fish or dump bear).

Default Bear hams

I always try to save the hams and cure them up. Just like pork. Most people dont know the difference when they are eating it.
Have a few freinds that like the meat, so I save all the loins and tie them up into roasts for them.

So why vote then? It is pretty clear the question in the poll is directed at those who hunt bears.
