Lots of people use tape on their lines... All I ever do is drop it until it hits bottom and than gauge how much line I'm bringing in with each full rotation of the reel so I can put my presentation at desired depth.

You can use a clip on weight to get you down quick. attach small clip on bobber(1/2" or 3/4" red and white float), subtract the length of the reel arm and you are good to go.

Or if you have a fishfinder/flasher you can use it to set your depth. Set just above the fish.

You can also use buttons, some use slip bobber knots and as suggested tape but the tiny clip on bobber is quick to change and remove.

oops didnt figure in height above bottom. as said two feet good starting point.

I use my sounder if im really working hard to get a fish, but normally bottom 2' works in water less than 15 ', would think of bringing up more in water over 20'.closer to bottom if I was after ling.
