Thumbs up

Wow I missed that one but hey it is just one mans opinion. I live near cold lake, fish cold lake and the lake is good to go for all to enjoy whatever you wish to legally do on it.
We haul up a lot of lakers, small but still lots of action. Spring walleye is freaking incredible, gators in the back bays along with perch, nice sandy beaches that if you scoot along the shoreline you can have a private shore lunch and swim or just lay around. Winter if the lake has a chance to freeze over you can fish, skidoo etc, hang out at the ski hill, cross country ski at the provincial park...ya I guess I bragged enough about the lake, hope it doesn't make the Internet for all to enjoy!

Like I said his opinion, meh, forgot to mention lingcod fishing too, probably the best eating critter out of the lake, poor mans lobster.

I used to drive 3 hours from Morinville to fish in Cold Lake. Had a blast fishin' there but only fished the hard water. It's a great lake but I'm not drivin' 9 hours to get there now.

Hahaha.... the Internet ruined it. I'm surprised he doesn't say that I ruined it. Anyways this site is not for person bashing.

He did his share by posting these two videos. Best fishing in the world from cold lake. I believe he has since changed the name or tags to exclude cold lake.

Still fun to watch.

These videos are old already this is not a good representation of today's fishing.... oh too late trucks a probably lined up from edmonton to cold lake waiting to get on the ice.

Have fun out there treat the fish carefully and hope we will have a great fishery for many more years.

I missed the collapse! Am I the only guy that catch a lot of fish on Cold Lake?
If that is a collapse then I am enjoying it too much

While it may not be an issue on a large lake, the internet can have major effects on smaller bodies of water. PCR burbot comes to mind, and more

The regs and pressure are what has hurt Cold. People want to keep a fish so they weed through dozens of small guys to do so. The lake trout are hurt more by catch and release fishing as they don't always burp properly and in only a few trips I have already seen a number of floaters.

There almost needs to be some sort of special reg system in place where you can only keep a fish or two all year long. Kind of like what SK does with La Ronge.

Before it was the internet it was the Frenchmen in St.Paul ruining lakes haha. Word gets out either way and the hoards show up.

Just playing devils advocate here but... It is a little frustrating being born and raised in the area and having people from the city walk up to you and tell you that Cold Lake will never be fished out and you should have kept the 16 pound laker you just let go. Then go on to talk about how they see big fish pulled out on the AO forum all the time. This happened to me a few years ago and the person is regular AO poster especially on Cold Lake threads.

By all means its a public resource and should be managed properly so everyone in the province can enjoy it but experiences such as the one I just shared leave a bad impressions with people who live in the area who have to deal with all the abandoned fire pits, frozen turds and garbage left on the lake every winter.

The Cold Lake Trout fishery was essentially collapsed for 60 years. It was referred to as The Dead Sea for a while and didn't really bounce back until the late 90's early 2000's after stocking millions of trout. Understandably people are afraid to lose that resource again and freak out when they see 100 vehicles on the lake they used to see none on.

Default This is rather useless rhetoric .......

Since the invention of fishing electronics , this lake pillaging has been on going .
A little bit of education is a dangerous thing . The gooberment will close that
Lake .
In Alberta this forum has to take a certain amount of responsibility . Though
The general consensus on here has always been conservation .
The answer is a draw for a keeper licence with restricted retention ,all other
Licences C&R . No kids or seniors can keep fish . I am fortunate to have lived through
the era where the thought that fish would be scarce never occurred to
Anyone , certainly not your genius biologists .
Keep postin Doc , just realize not everyone is of pure heart and good intentions .

Hey Levy it wasn't just the Frenchman, it was also the Ukrainskies and all the Senoirs that pigged out on there limits. I remember as a kid going to Frenchman Lake and fishing was great, also 25 to 30 years ago at Missawowi (spelling) and catching 30 jumbo perch until all the Lac la Biche locals hammered it then it winter killed.

I've personally learned some great spots from St. Paul Frenchmen! But he was my grandfather, so I think it was acceptable.

You make some interesting points Newell, But the one point I disagree with 100% is your suggestion that seniors should not be allowed to keep a fish. That will never happen.

I don't understand what the problem is here?

I spent a few days out on cold lake this summer and I think on my slowest day we still landed 25+ fish in the boat. Out of about 300 fish landed I think we probably kept about 5-6.

F&W keep a pretty close eye on the lake, it's the locals that cry about the "outsiders coming in and wrecking the lake" that are the worst poachers out on the lake. Watching the same guy make 4-5 trips a day from the fishing hole to shore isn't too suspicious at all....

Report them then, case solved.

Locals or outsiders does not matter period, whoever breaks the law on any lake needs to be held accountable and dealt with by the authorities.

And that was back in the day of dacron line, wooden boats, and a million less people in the province. It was fished out once before and it will get fished out again. I am sure back in the day those people thought it would never get fished out too.

I read a history on the lake about 20 years ago, wish I still had it so I could share. Was also told there was once salmon put in the lake as an effort to bring it back. Perhaps somone who knows more could start a thread on it.

This is not some little perch lake where one can see the population rise and fall a few times in your life time. It may take decades to fish it out and if there is no stocking program and entire life time to get it back.

Hell we can fish out an entire ocean!! and people think little old Cold Lake cant get fished out (even thought it has)??? Crazy stuff.

A scum bag is a scum bag. I've met some locals from there that made my stomach turn. Actually had them bitch about city folk to me after claiming they had been out there over 20 times...3rd week in January only... yeah....

Anyways, I stand by my first sentence.

Not knocking at all on your post levy. Just adding. Hope you have another great season there. I'm living/working in Calgary this year so unlikely I'll make it up there. Have a good one!

I'm confused .....

I was under the impression the lakers were getting more numerous and easier to catch but seemed to be smaller .....

Wouldn't that indicate the younger age classes of fish are doing well???

Just curious ......
