Flew over Rock Island yesterday. A little over half the lake still had ice on it. What was left was very cracked and rotten. I would guess Thursday or Friday it will be clear.

Default they

"They" the local first nations commercial fished the sh*t out of the lake again this winter!
My understanding is the land and many miles around it are in a "land claim"
One more tip. I camped there last year and "they" had a Pow wow all night long in the camp ground! Bring your ear plugs and self defence!

I was there lots this winter fishing with the sleds . Talked to a fellow netting and he said he had pulled 1000 kg of fish that winter and it was only the end of January! Lotsa fish but def a fishermans lake. Pulling blades around wont get you your fish. This is def one of those lakes that 90% of the fish are in 10% of the lake

This thread is just hillarious. Guy's simply don't want people going there. The CO's are out there in full force all the time people. It is only up the highway from Calling Lake. And we all know how strict they are up there. Rock Island Lake is a superb fishery and don't listen to these fred's here. Just respect the fishery and people and you will have zero issue's.

The topic of the campground came up a month or so ago. Do a search. I posted the link about the campground being open. It's not hard to get this info google Rock Island Lake alberta campground. One of the first links is about the MD of Oportunity buyin the land from the natives. It's surprising how much misinformation people give just to keep people away from "their" spot.

Oh my gosh Rock Island is such a secret! Stop talking about it. Plus you have to use secret hooks as pulling blades is worthless!

I was at the campground today and just heading out to fish it. Campground is kind of a mess but definately usable. Water level is higher then normal. No dock installed yet.

Also, fish and game were there yesterday.

Yes that is what it was the lake has no fish skunked 10 times in a row used every hook in my box and still seen no fish and it is very far away 2 hours on a dirt road then 45 mins down a cutline stay away from this lake everyone its just trouble. The campground is just small patches of dirt with trees cut down hard to fit a tent between the tree stumps.

Actually I haven't fished it in years but going to try saturday for those who thinks its a secret lake you really should'nt make all your fishing plans based on forum posts just go try for yourself.

In all seriousness people, if you're new to the lake, be careful around the rock islands. That south island stretches out for quite a distance underwater, keep your eyes glued to the Humminbird for depth. Oh, and if you're planning to catch a lot of fish, be prepared to be skunked. This is a tough lake to fish unless you've done some homework.

I was being sarcastic about trying to say things to keep people away lol but watching your finder for shallow water won't really help anyone who has been there knows the drops are very steep and fast you would be on it before you seen it on the finder when the water was low there were about 5 spots you would hit with a prop but if water is up and the second island is under then I think that second island is all you need to watch for just to the south of the other one.

Ohhh how I wish I listened to you about saving my gas today was a bust my favourite spot for big pike had a net going right through it in front of the river. I still caught fish though and as nice as it is to take a walleye home it still wasn't worth the 2 and a half hour drive anyways shouldnt have doubted you but last time I fished the lake it was hundreds of walleye a day.
