Gull ice update
He went 25' out and the ice was 12" thick. Then he went out 150' and the ice was 6" thick and water was 8' deep
That was taken 20 mins ago.....but not at brownlowes.....

Probably will spell good news when everyone checks the ice thickness close to shore and drives on...
Was the ice pretty rough? I saw pictures of Slave lake and it is a huge mess because of the wind we had while these bigger lakes were freezing.

Recommended ice thickness is 12-15 inch minimum for trucks so I hope you mean with a quad/snowmobile or light car... Some of the ice out there probably isn't good quality ice considering how the wind was breaking ice chunks up and then refreezing them.

Toldja. Solid ten inches on gull average in the water you should be fishing. 20 years can't be wrong. Nobody needs to drive on or fish any deeper then ten foot so what's the big friggen deal. Walk out on opening day like we always did. Drive on at xmas. Use your heads guys. Maybe it's a different gull lake you guys are talking about...I just walk out to the same general area maybe hit er first hole maybe not. Respect your fellow anglers. Mind your own business. C'mon guys we gotta fresh start.

I just don't see the point as to why people drive 50 yards off the shore to fish. Why not just walk and not risk it lol? It ain't that far!!

Was out on Stoners landing (the new public launch on the north west) yesterday, 10" at 20 yards and 8" at 50 yards out. The lake was talking really loud.

Thanks Gumbi! Pretty decent. South side usually has a bit more. Good news. That is usually what I feel is decent enough for the snowmobile. If the temps improve a bit, might have to get my butt out there.
As for those that are considering driving out, good luck if you do...

I rarely drive on actually lol. It's only a 100 or so yards away so I walk on.
Saw the windchill warnings last night and decided not to go. Still have all my gear put away from last year so hopefully I'll make it after next week's wainright hunt.

I'm just curious, but why do people feel the need to drive on so early? Just because it's opening day? The ice will only get thicker from here on out. It's not only yourselves you are putting in danger but possibly others around you. Ice conditions this early can never be judged accurately. The shack can always be put out when the ice is good and safe, with no doubts.

yea well....my buddies quad/snowmobile/light truck wont start.....all we have is a 350 diesel....so he is gunna drop the shack off on shore....then when the ice is thick enough...or someone lends me a skidoo/quad to move the shack about 400 meters we will be good to go.
if anyone is gunna be out next week with a skidoo or quad and feels like moving a real light shack about 400 meters please let me know.....maybe i can trade something....or a 6 pack or something......
any takers? LOL

Decided not to drive to Gull today, like others have observed, the high windchill predictions with -38C temps will keep us close to home tomorrow, if it improves maybe just venture out on Sylvan & if the
vehicle doesn't start, I can walk home.
(Env Cda Lacombe .... A few flurries beginning in the morning and ending in the afternoon. Clearing late in the afternoon. Wind northwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 increasing to 40 gusting to 60 near noon. High minus 21. Wind chill minus 38C.)
That's just stupid cold.
