pretty irresponsible answer gringo! the majority of that same bay was open water 2 days ago, the main lake is still wide open! its no where near safe enough to fish yet, someone is going to read your response and get themselves killed!

you maybe didnt notice that he changed his response after my reply either. maybe not a death sentence, but it sure as hell could be, you willing to toss the dice with your life? or someone you care about? he also said "its on" whuich to a lot of people would indicate the ice is good to go. Im just trying to save someone a lot of grief, there are a whole lot of people who dont pay attention and check things out for themselves, and would just assume the ice is all good to go. far stretched? not in the least.. sorry Id rather be thought a dick than have someone maybe die because they read a bad report

If your gonna blast on to the lake going fully off an AO post for ice thickness without checking the ice yourself... then that's definitely a you problem.

City people Wayne don't worry they see there ponds freezing in there communities and they figure Newell is good too go. Newell is one of the last lakes to freeze in southern Alberta. Even when it is a cold winter the south end of that lake is scary.

Sitting on 7 inches of ice but there is still some open water as well. Play at your own risk and check thickness for yourself as you go.

"Perpetually Offended"?
Not! Just tired of the "city folk" blah blah blah
Lived and ranched in the Bassano/Brooks area and can say without any doubt local boys don't understand ice any better...just ask some that took a swim.

Here's an idea
Keep the discussions civil and to the topic without trolling the city versus rural stuff...then we can all talk about what we supposedly have in common...fishing and hunting

For my part, I have fished Lake Newell since 1967, both summer and winter. I have been on it when the ice was so thick you could barely get your auger through it, and times when it was so thin I kept an eye on my truck and left the door open...I, personally would not go on it if there was open water ANYWHERE, as the wind can do some weird things on that lake. I wait until it is at least 6 inches across...no fish is worth taking the big dunk.
So, IMHO, if you have 3 inches and open water, give it a week or two...again, just IMHO
Sorry for being argumentative earlier...I was a cad
