The ultimate ice fishing tent/shanty!!
everyone wants a reliable ice fishing tent.....the final straw was last week when my Eskimo tent kept collapsing under a mild wind on the lake. I had enough and set out to build something better. A hybrid so to speak........ Introducing the aluminum framed collapsible, and easily portable.......HOLE SHOT.

So I still have to hang the door and install the floor with holes but at least this gives you an idea. It's made with 1/8 wall aluminum square tubing, aluminum checker plate, with a puck board bottom. And the front portion sticks out to accommodate a propane bottle and battery or whatever.....
The end walls fold down flat to transport in a pickup truck and you can lift one end with 2 fingers.
Completion to come soon as well as a weight.... I am going to guess 130 lbs all finished.

Costs will come at a later date once I tally the numbers and yes two screw in/out style register vents are planned yet for each end. Currently I am around 700 bucks but that is because of extremely good aluminum costs..... this would probably retail for 1800-2000 but still cheaper than buying a tent every 3 years and the tarp can be replaced in about an hour on this one....

The best part is that it only has to be set up once and it's easier to setup than a tent..

And the floor just in..... holes drilled and filled with pray foam for warmth and to make the bottom solid since it does not ride on skids. This should make it nice for fishing as you don't have to haul your fish 2 feet out of the water to be out of the hole.
I appreciate any feedback from this point on as well as other user friendly ideas.... thanks

looks good. you will have to have some sort of anchor system or you will have a wind surfer as well  the wind will either push you or topple you over depending on direction

Looks pretty good I must say. Maybe cut and gorilla glue some 1" styrofoam insulation to those bottom side and end panels for some sound deadening quality? This way you won't spook fish if you accidentally knock something in to the aluminum. Good job!

That's a really good idea.... was thinking caulking would be good but foam is probably the best bet......

Are the rivets gonna wear off dragging over the ice ? Might wanna glue some nylon runners over them ? PL400 comes to mind. Looks good !

Looks like what I use for years . Until I got a pop up unit.
Just found it a pain to drag across the deep snow with all the gear.
And more of a pain to load it up in a truck.

Not sure about the rivets..... if they don't hold up after a dozen trips I guess I will have to do something different.....

On the side of the unit you could put skis that fold up or slid up to lay the whole unit on the ice for fishing and transport on the skis. No need to worrie about the rivets falling off.

Quite the project. Looks very nice, and I look foreward to hearing how it all works out after a few trips. Like JR posted, it does look like a handfull for one person. Nice job.

I can load it in and out of my truck ok.... I'm a pretty big guy though. But other than that it really is a breeze to fish with....it's nice to be able to throw all your gear inside and throw a strap over the hitch to relocate. -30 today and was a little chilly so an insulted tarp would be needed or a bigger heater.... I used a mr heater portable. Fishing was slow....

I'de fab up some removeable skiis with a minimum 6" lift to avoid snow filling up the inside through the holes and get the rivets off the ice.Also i would get screw in lids like they use on water tanks for the holes.I have a similar unit right now built out of wood,on the end walls i ran 2x4's 16" long horizontally a 1/2" apart to slide plywood in for a bench 8' long ,in the middle i built a small support wall that is hinged and folds down,it supports the bench.Everything folds down and the plywood bench lays on the floor.A sunflower propane heater keeps it hot inside.I also am going to spray the outside of the tarp with black guard to absorb heat.keep the tarp durable and cut down on wind noise.
I am currently designing a 5'x8'x6' 8" tall collapseable shack with sheets of insulation to make up the walls and roof.It will glide across the ice on puck board skiis.I am going to add a folding bench seat that will make into a bed for the over night trips.The insulation will add a nice R factor and sound barrier.This unit will fold to approx 40" tall and will hold all your ice fishing equip. inside.An electric heater or big buddy should easily heat this unit.
If it works out well I may build to sell.

Nice job. Are you pulling it far? If so you may want to reinforce the corners with aluminium angle, bolted or welded. I suspect over time the corners might crack as aluminium tends to crack if flexed a lot. Other that that I like it. Ingenuity at it's best.
