257 Weatherby thoughts?

I am contemplating on buying a 257 weatherby. I have a 308 win, 300 win and a 444 marlin already so looking for a long range deer rifle and something to shoot the odd coyote. I would like some input from 257 owners what they think of this caliber?

the 257 WM is awesome, I bought one a couple years ago and rigged it up for an antelope hunt, just pollaxed him at 327 yards with a 110gr ELDX, it shoots flat, hit's hard and punches above it's weight, mine is a weatherby vanguard first light, great gun.

Not a big hyper velocity fan. My .257 Roberts does nearly everything the Weatherby does just quieter. If there were a slightly better selection of projectile weights in 1/4 bore I think, it would be a more popular round. that is my only complaint.

I am a fan too. Have the Weatherby MKV Ultra Light in Left Hand. Great shooting rifle, not picky about loads, will even shoot factory Weatherby cheap ammo into less than a 1/2". Not a good gun for target shooting due to barrel life but an awesome, low recoil long range performer for deer, antelope etc. You will never wear one out shooting 2 or 3 rounds a year at game, and a few every year to check zero. 100 grain bullet at 3600 FPS, whats not to like.

great calibre..took one in trade a long while back and a great shooter. Gifted it to a young friend and he's been shooting up a storm with it...accurate and flat shooting.

Pls remember you need a 26 inch tube to get your velocity...you can get 3500 fps out of a 25-06 with a 24 inch tube ... the quarter bore sort of falls into a black hole with the 6mm and 6.5mm on either side of it outshining it bullet bc and sd.. that said 3 people I know have used a 25 all their live for the most part and swear by them...so there you go

You can’t go wrong with the 257. 25-06 is great but the Weatherby is just more of a good thing.

I have one in a Vanguard Sub MOA. It’s a wonderful hunting cartridge. Mine shoots ridiculously well with factory ammunition and hand loads. 100gr and 115gr weights. So much so that it was only the cost of factory rounds that pushed me to hand load. Recoil isn’t bad at all and a super flat shooter. I’ve only taken three, maybe four big game animals but it really thumps them. Using on coyotes - oh my. If you aren’t worried about hides at all, it’s simply a glorious thing. As mentioned above, it’s not a volume shooting cartridge; but that was never the intention upon inception either.

I stumbled upon a rifle in this caliber a few ago for a very good deal, a steal type of thing. Did some research and there are a whole bunch of threads here on the subject; search google for “outdoorsmenforum.ca: wby 257” and it will provide you with every single thread on this forum about the cartridge.

Unfortunately for me, by the time I decided to buy it, the rifle was sold, lol. I actually saw it going to “sold out”.

I recently bought a vanguard accuguard, bunch of brass and ttsx, bunch of factory ammo. Haven't shot much with it yet though but I enjoy it!

I Iiked the cartridge, but until I had my Mark V rebarreled, the accuracy was disappointing. Once rebarreled, it was an honest 1/2moa rifle.

I like my vsnguard2, it will shoot 3 100ttsx into 1/2", 115tsx in 3/4". One thing i really like about it is recoil, steady push without kick. It never failed on wt deer.

I have a left hand Tikka T3 with a 26” KS Arms barrel chambered in 257 wby. Shoots a 110 accubond at 3505 in to .3” size groups. Since getting the 257 wby I have sold 2- 6.5x55’s and my 270 wsm. I’ve shot 3 whitetails with it and it puts a smile on your face how quick they hit the ground. I’ve probably shot about 10 coyotes with it. It’s definitely not a “fur friendly” gun. After seeing what it will do on deer I wouldn’t be afraid to use it on moose or elk.

And they shoot, here is a couple loads I worked up for mine using 110gr Hornady Interbonds, it also shoots the Hornady factory 110gr ELDX into .600" and the Weatherby 100 gr factory loads into .900" I tried them all when I was farming the brass.

Before I bought the vanguard first light I had a vanguard stainless synthetic that I bought here used from a fellow AO'r, it shot well also and really loved the 100gr bullets it now belongs to a buddy of mine in Saskatchewan, he loves it.

The only way to know what you lose, is to test a 26" barrel, and then cut it to 24". Chamber and barrel dimensions have to be identical for a valid test. A 24" barrel with a tighter chamber can match the velocity of a 26" barrel, but you are producing more pressure.

I don’t have a .257 bee but I have a .25-06 and it’s been awesome. Fast and flat. Shoot the 110gr.

Everyone needs a quarter-bore! Mines a Rem 700 CDL SF in .257 WBY. Glass bedded the action and free floated the barrel last winter and had nothing but tight groups with everything from 75gr Varminters, 100 TSX (RL 25), and especially 120 Speer soft point over IMR 4350. Brass acquisition is not cheap, but it seems to hold up really well. Of course it’s kind of a hog on powder compared to other 25’s.

Never lost an animal with that cartridge. She’s a keeper.

The top two Weatherby cartridges, by a very large margin, is the 300 Weatherby, followed by the 257. These are the cartridges that made Weatherby, and they are still the majority of their sales. They make a wide range of other interesting cartridges, but the rest combined probably don't match the sales of the 300 and 257.

It is hard to believe just how far ahead of his time Roy Weatherby actually was and just how much grief he got from the mainline gun "Experts" of the day. In my mind, small to mid bore needs speed, and the more the better. The other option, large bore, slower moving is every bit as effective, but from .24 to .338, since you don't have displacement you need to have speed. Hydrostatic shock is real, but it doesn't really show up till you get over 2,600 FPS impact velocity.
