Default Alberta harvest surveys, Lottery for special license draw tag.

I know it’s a pretty low chance of winning this draw tag. However, I was wondering if anybody knows whether or not winning this tag will affect your priority points or not??

Has anyone actually ever met a winner or is it a farce?

They posted the name of last years winner on the email I received last week, but I can’t remember it now.

Yes I know a woman who won this and I believe she chose a moose tag. Does not affect priorities.

I completed my surveys, and have none outstanding, but I keep getting e-mails telling me to complete my surveys.

Thanks Lefty! I’m pretty hopeful! After missing out on my antelope hunt last fall, it would be a pretty easy choice for me! Trophy antelope or or moose for me.

Trophy Antelope easy choice for me,it’s the longest wait time to draw.

I tend to agree,my concern is how the lameass survey info is interpreted?

ie;if I hunted deer in 3 different units for a total of 30 days and didn’t kill a deer,do the bios interpret that as low deer numbers??
Nowhere on the survey do they ask about the 200+ antlerless and 30+ bucks that I passed on.
I think in the future I might as well just report that I hunted one day and filled my General WT plus 2x supplemental tags, which would be a more accurate reflection of my hunt experience.

I hope that they interpret the numbers as being low, from my perspective there should be many more wild animals on the landscape. If they managed landscapes based optimal wildlife utilization rather than insurance or agricultural depredation I think extended draw wait times would be completely worth it and eventually lead to increased opportunity. Certain units I have hunted for years need a break.

Then stop hunting there.

These surveys were the demise of the general archery moose hunts in the 500’s
Too high of a archery harvest = on draw now

Is that a bad thing?

Ya it is. It takes 5 years to get a bull moose tag in a zone where we have a bit of land. Does it matter if I shoot 1 moose every other year with my bow? Not really. Especially since if they leave our property, or if we aren’t around, they get rolled by the first “hey how are ya” that sees them. The numbers haven’t and won’t get better when people are allowed to shoot as many as they want.

Hahaha I’ll keep hunting my family farmland that I’ve hunted my entire life. I’ll also keep hunting everywhere else in the province.

I will suggest that if hunters want to claim that they are interested in conservation of the animals we persue then we should not prioritize our hunting opportunity over seeing healthy herds. Overharvest can be a major problem due to general seasons, unregulated hunting, poaching, predation, tag allocations. All of these should be curtailed if populations are not where they should be based on the lands carrying capacity.

Giving biologists accurate data helps ensure that they can make informed decisions, they don’t usually do that based on pressure from various parties but at least I can feel like I’ve done my part. On top of that I generally eat my tags rather than harvest animals from areas with historically low numbers based on my own observation.

Unregulated hunting is a major issue in certain areas but It will take drastic measures for anyone to incur the political blow back from infringing on those “rights”
