Default Closest salmon rivers to calgary

Me and a couple friends are looking to go salmon fishing for a weekend here in july in BC, we will be driving and would prefer to keep the drive as short as possible. Haven't salmon fished before but have seen alot of it on tv and i think im up for the challenge. Any feed back on close river's would be great. Thanks guys

Truly the closest river that would hold salmon would be the Eagle River near 3 Valley Gap. But there aren't any salmon in there until October when the Sockeye run. Oh ya by the way it's also closed off for fishing.

The best thing for you to do would be to drive all the way to either Smithers 16 hours and fish the Bukley or the Skeena River. I would recommend getting a guide there. You can check on the internet and find some great places to stay and fish. Here's one place you might want to try. http://www.tworiverslodge.ca/ or http://www.adventuresmithers.com/htm...ng/fishing.htm

Or you can go the 12 hours to Vancouver and fish the Vedder or the Frazer Rivers. I would also suggest getting a guide there as well. Check with Freds Custom Tackle on Vedder Road. http://www.fredscustomtackle.com/ Or STS Guiding. http://www.guidebc.com/

Good luck with your adventure.

The Clearwater is where I go every year and it's only about 8 hours. Unfortunately it's pretty tough catching them (been skunked so far) as you need some locals to let you know exactly when they are running as each year has been different. Also because it is so far upstream only the Chinooks are worth eating, the smaller salmon are pretty beat up that far upstream. The Chinooks usually come up early-mid Aug but sometimes it's been almost +/- 1 month.
