Default Wizard lake ice and snow

How is wizard lake ice and snow? Is it drivable with 4 x 4? Or with AWD suv? Thinking about going for this weekend?

most lakes right now need 4x4 with rear locking diffs. Havent been to wizard this year yet though.

If you are where it's packed you are ok with normal 4WD and potentially AWD. Beyond that is locking diff & ski-doo territory. Pretty much goes for all central and north lakes.

Please be really careful driving on Wizard,I have seen it open and or just a skiff of ice during the coldest of winter months.Usually this occurs on the south side and typically more on the west half of the lake due to the bubbling gas pockets that are active year round.

Default Wizard Lake

There were a couple of trucks driving from the west end down the lake this past weekend. They had to keep a good pace to keep going
There are some plate sized spots down the center of the lake that never freeze. Keep your eye out for them as they could ruin your day.
