Black bear rut
Just like the white tail rut I’m sure everyone has different opinions when peak is but I’m curious what time frame are black bears in full rut in Alberta?

This.
Drives me nuts.
We can't hunt the first week of June when the adult males are really out, but we can start baiting in the middle of march when there's still over 3' of snow...

First week of June one hour north of Edmonton.
And to all the people against baiting stop cruising dandelion invested pipelines and oat fields looking for your bear as it is still baiting just with a different bait flavor. Get out there and walk the forest looking for one and then you are hunting.
Anyways I hope you enjoy a bit of bear porn.

Baiting is a lot of work and money. I’m thinking about quitting. It may be easier to spot and stalk at night. Then when you find a bear just play dead. It should get close enough to skin.

Anybody that has actually baited bears, and invested hundreds of hours in sourcing and delivering bait to remote sites and driven hundreds of miles, fuel costs, knows that baiting bears is not easy.

Last few days of May and first week of June, the big boars should be moving. And bucksman wins dumbest post of the day.

Baiting is even easier when you're trying to kill a well aged big boar, they are the dumbest....Usually one sit and it's done!

Darn right it ain't easy, takes lots of effort, time and money. Gathering bait is a long process and trying to store it is harder. I've done it for a long time now and I'm not ready to quit, but it is hard work!

If you know an easy way to bait, please, share with the group..
I'm sure there are dozens, if not hundreds of us that have spent countless hours and dollars baiting the most prime areas we can get to, feeding hundreds of average bears and every other creature you can think of, just for a glimpse at a booner.
So go on, don't hold back. I've got my pen and paper ready...

I have baited bears. Fed more than enough cubs. It wasn't for long so did not have time to establish the baits. Time consuming is what it is, but its fun so I wouldnt call it hard work. In my opinion, spot and stalk would be harder to find a mature boar rather than placing bait and conditioning bears to come to the bait. especially if you run the same baits year after year, that cub turns into a mature boar and probably isn't that afraid as he has seen/smelled you sitting in that stand for years and you haven't hurt him yet.

Every year I get boars with sows on camera in May. Got pictures last week of a giant topping a sow. There's no doubt that the first two weeks of June is prime for the rut but don't ever count out the last two weeks of May.

2018 bear camp activity
Just got back from my last sits, a new position at work only allowed me to sit 6 times this year. Trail cams had the most action from May 15-20, we bait near farmland so the bears are very sketchy, only one shooter on camera in daylight. All big bears on cam vanished about a week ago to chase tail. Only had new smaller boars roaming in. Full moon last two nights and I saw zero bears, if you don't think the moon affects animals you'd be wrong. I would never hunt around the full moon, but work schedule made me get out there. Here's to next year!

You do know that hunting at night, even without an artificial light under a full moon is illegal, yes? 😂😜
All jokes aside(yes I know what you meant) I agree, hunting during a full moon CAN BE productive, esp if you hunt ALL DAY.Watch for game to move mid day under a full moon vs the more "traditional" activity periods of first and last light, which is why I think many hunters mistakenly believe that full moon hunting is an unproductive waste of time, because those hunters tend to only hunt mornings and evenings.
I'm a big believer in the validity of Solunar tables/moon charts etc....wutever you want to call them....and they ALWAYS predict mid-day activity during a full moon, and they are often bang on,too many times I've witnessed increased activity that coincides precisely with the predicted times for it to be a coincidence.
And I'm not just talking big game neither.....coyotes in open fields mid day during the Major Activity predicted....flocks of waterfowl landing at 10am sharp after a shotless cold morning....just as predicted...etc etc...
