I don't guide from a boat on the Bow, so rod days don't apply to me specifically, but I do pay for a business license and a specific permit for the areas I operate in...

As well to combat funny games played in BC.

ANYONE caught selling or buying rod days to another guide should lose all remaining spots and be banned from guiding going forward. No out of province guides allowed.

That's one of the issues I think JayHad is referring to...

Rod days can (unfairly) favour an outfitter or fly shop vs an "independent" guide... Outfitters could, and fly shops do have much more $ to bid for more rod days then an independent guide!

I'll try to convey my thoughts via text, I'll give you a bit of my history.

I am not a guide.
I have been a guide and floated my last paid day in 2019. Up to summer 2021 I received calls from local shops asking if I could take days, I didn't.
I carried a business license, as I was running a business.
I carried insurance. Do some consider it expensive? Yes however it is cheaper than a lawsuit.
I have guided in BC during the late 80s to the late 90s, I guided southern Alberta for 10 years.
The only dog I have in this race is the resource, I have no financial liability involved.

As for rod days, forget about this nonsense.
The increased licence dollars will go to general revenue with in 5 years, if it isn't legislated to general revenue from the get go.

Guides will always push for more rod days, and will show positive economic business plans to achieve more rod days. The math works out and the government, the guides and local economy will benefit, at the cost of the resource. They'll get the days.

This happened in BC and again how's the Steelhead fishing?
Guide licenses are worth more than a house in the lower mainland.

If the resource is suffering it should be closed, regardless of financial impacts.

If a fishery is stressed to the point that the discussion of rod days is on the table...the first thing that should happen is that guiding on that fishery is NOT allowed.
