Yeah! Johnny! First Star this week, and Smith was second.

Stupid bye week, might be on the outside looking in by Saturday. Winnipeg first draw back, tough call to make it eight, 6 of the next 7 home, time to shine up the home record.

Too early in the season to scoreboard watch but Sid & co could do us a favor tonight & win in regulation.

They could, and it looks like the Avs might help out with the Sharks too...they are up 2-0. Avs are on a tear lately too, looking for their 8th straight win.

Crazy eh, bottom 3 are out, but that leaves Minny, Avs, Ducks, Hawks, all with a legitimate shot of anywhere from first to 12th in the division!! And these 4 currently are outside looking in, will make for good stretch run.

The most exciting thing for me would be to see a Flames/Oilers series in the playoffs, so its a bit disappointing to see the Oilers out of the running pretty much.

Default Trade

I got off work early today and was listening to 960 on the way home with the discussion focusing on the availability of Karlsson. I've also read/heard the Flames are interested in E. Kane. Got me wondering, okay, likely dreaming, of a potential trade.

E. Kane:
I really hope the Flames don't go after this guy. Decent player, but hes a left winger. He won't crack the top line as he isn't better than Johnny, maybe play on the 2nd line, but I'm not convinced he's better than Tkachuk, so maybe the 3rd line and a PP guy. I think it will take considerable assets to get him which I don't want them to do for a 3rd line, PP specialist rental. I'm also not to fond of the apparent baggage that follows him around, we don't need that on a young team.

Karlsson:
This is were the dreaming comes in. I doubt Ottawa wants to trade Karlsson but I don't think they can afford to keep him. So, assuming he's on his way out and Ottawa wants him in the Western Conference, I was thinking TJ Brodie, Sam Bennet, and 2018 1st round pick (might need another 1st thrown in). The cap is about a wash, Senators get a top paring Dman (on Ottawa anyway), a top six forward (on Ottawa anyway), and a 1st round pick.

If this isn't Calgary's window, I don't know when its going to be in the next 5 years with Tkachuk, Jankowski, Rittich, and Ferland on relatively cheap deals and Smith and Gio's play likely declining, possibly rapidly, in the coming years. I don't know, may they are going to take Stajan's and Brouwer's money and sign someone, but Brouwer likely isn't going anywhere till 2021. If worse came to fruition, they could likely trade Karlsson next year and recoup some of what was spent. All that and I forgot Calgary traded their 1st round pick to NYI....

I also heard they are interested in Smith and his 3 goals and -18 in 2018. Anyone know why?

Not that I am trying to help the Shames, but if you guys want to go deep in the Western conference, you need to get bigger and nastier. Ferland is a light middle weight and Thachuk is annoying but can only slash a guy in the ankles from behind. Which means your GM's job is not really that hard, go after some 3rd and 4th line grit and size because you don't want Gio and your goalie being the only guys willing to throw the mitts!

Seen Brouwer fight this year? He's 3-0 with a TKO in his last match.

Perhaps true... It seems we are on the cusp of a changing NHL.

I think that kind of hockey kinda fizzled out last decade. Of the four conference finalists last year (Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Nashville, Anaheim), do any of them have alot of "grit and size" who are throwing the mits?

The most fights he has ever had in a single season was 5. I can't believe you are using Abdelkader as your measuring stick, he never even dropped his left glove and then turtled. If you want to go move forward with Brouwer as your muscle, have at it.

I said to get out of the Western conference and Anahiem and Nashville are big, heavy teams with lots of grit and size.

First 10 minutes could be interesting. First game back for both teams coming off their 5 day break and only one practice.

Just checked the Philly New Jersey game, wow, 4 SOG and Philly is winning 3-0.

Absolutely mind boggling bad call to give Monahan a penalty when two guys haul him down on pp!! Instead of 5 on 3, it's a 4 on 4?!...but Brodie scores on a beauty shot!!!

Goaltender interference? Hardly.

Two terrible calls against Flames already. Is Wideman on the bench today?

Well crap. Flames can't get a handle on shoot outs, and streak ends. I guess they get a 'participation' point...but needed a win.

Good game, it has been a great run for the Flames. If the Oilers put in half the effort of these two teams they may not be slithering in the bottom like they are. Both goalies stood on their head as well, exciting game to watch.

Is it just me or is it fairly typical for about 1/2 the Flames shooters to miss the net?

I don't know what happens to them in SO lately...early season they were doing ok, but lately it's been awful. Tkachuk the only one to consistently score. Can't wrap my head around the weak dekes and weak shots...

On a side note, how about the Av's. What a turnaround they have had, 9 in a row.

I agree, the vast majority of the time it wouldn't take as long as that stupid shoot out
