Rod or reel?

Never touched a smoke reel. I bought a 6'6" spinning medium 1 piece rod last year and it was by far the best rod I've ever used, though I will admit I haven't used many high end rods. I liked it so much I ended up buying the 6' medium light and a 7' medium heavy last weekend. I initially intended on looking for similar rods at a slightly lower price point, but after walking both Wholesale and Cabelas in Saskatoon 3 times I just couldn't find anything that felt as comfortable in my hand as the smoke, the grip feels very natural for me. The only rods that piqued my interest were either $50-100 more than the smoke or a bit less and only available in 2pc (and now that I've gone to 1 piece I'll never go back). I've never seen anyone with a bad opinion of the smoke yet.

not bad, really nice reel and rod, i got both of them, the rod has micro guides on it, looks pretty sweet and all for the price.

I picked up a Fenwick eagle GT 6'6" med act at the boat show and compared the smoke with a Shimano Saros 1000FA, I ended up going with the Saros. The smokes are nice, a buddy of mine has one and likes it, no complaints, but it didn't feel right for my liking... I'm using this set up for rigging, the smoke seemed better suited for casting. IMO

They have a few positives, in that they are light and have a decent drag system. But they aren't the smoothest reel on the market. I don't know why, but my reel and the one my buddy bought both seem to get a bit ruff after a few solid days of use. Just keep the lube to it and I'm sure you will like it.

Bought the 2500 last year to match up with a GLoomis jigger.

It was only 1oz lighter than the Shimano CI4 and it looked good on a black rod so I thought why not.

Decent reel but I should have spent the extra few bucks and stayed with the CI4. It definately has the superior drag to the Quantum as well as it just seems to fit my hand a little better than the Smoke.

All in all the Smoke is a decent reel and will serve you well. Just make sure you compare. A few bucks more may get you a totally different reel.

What other reels are in the same $170-200 range that are better then the smoke?
I want another reel or 2 this spring/fall. One I want to put 3lb test on and slap it on an ultra light.

They make a spin cast version of the smoke?

I thought it was only spinning or baitcast versions.

The patriach from pflueger is really nice same with shimano stradic fj and quantum exo

If u spend more money on any brand of reel it would be nicer
Just buy what feels most comfortable with you and which ever one that fits your budget most

Heard of breakage issues with the casting reel. Bought dad an Abu Revo MGX last year for his birthday , and wow. Great performance and super light.

Last year bought the Smoke Baitcaster on Smoke rod and loved it. Last week bought the Spincast Smoke on Smoke rod. So far the rod seems great have to wait till I fish the reel to make an opinion. I did look at lots of reviews for both and they were generally great all 5/5 with the exception of a few guys on tackle tour having issues with drag.
I honestly don't think it matters what you go with in that price range they are all going to be nice. Rods and reels have come along way for bang for your buck.

I tournament fish with 4 Quantum rods. A baitcaster Smoke and a spincaster Smoke. A baitcaster PT SuperLite and a spincaster PT SuperLite.

Reels should be kept on the small side. Quantum E10 is a good fit. As is a Shimano Calcutta. My buddy likes the Quantum Smoke baitcaster (reel) also.

Shimano Stradic 1000FJ (or the previous FI model) is a superior reel for the same money in my opinion.

The Stradic CI4 1000 is even better yet, and worth the extra $40 to my mind. For the ultralight setup, check out the CI4 MICROLINE. It's one step smaller than the 1000, and designed specifically for ultralight setups using very light line.

I bought the Revo last year as well with no complaints or problems.
