Default So! The Meds the Vet gave me may have caused my dogs deafness

And boy am I ****ed about it.

If you google Surolan and hearing loss...

You'll find quite a bit of info, both anecdotal and otherwise that this drug can sometimes cause permanent deafness in dogs.

IF you are treating the dog and notice possible hearing loss.... stop treatment.

Vet told us to continue treatment AFTER we told them about hearing loss and they performed a $280 sedation and deep ear canal cleaning.

It's been a few weeks and my dog still has poor heating....

I am beyond mad!
Vets got a responsibility to inform me about side effects...!

They ought to know about the drugs they are prescribing!

Dammit!!

The way I see it right now.... someone hurt my family via their damned negligence.

I'll be paying them a visit Monday....

Can't say I'm shocked, so many vets overprescribe.

Do you still have the bottle of ear drops? How many times a day and how many drops were prescribed? And let me guess, the vet dispensed it?

Mometamax is another drop one has to be aware of, it works great - when prescribed and used properly. I've talked to many people that used the drops - and they were told to use it too often. It can cause deafness as well.

I don't explicitly trust vets anymore, verify everything.

Raise the roof. One vet misdiagnosed my ex's dog, argued with me after he screwed up on the blood tests I ordered. "I'm the vet here", love being told that. Had I listened to the vet and put the dog on steroids, the dog likely would have died.

unfortunately , this doesnt apply just to vets anymore . i have started getting second opinions for dental and even medical work . costs more money and is time consuming but i have seen and heard of too many mistakes .

Very good advice right here! Do some research of your own. Google can be very enlightening. Not saying diagnose and treat yourself, just verify what you are being told. Make sure you check prescriptions from pharmacy also. My Mom picked up a drug for my Dad once that didn't even have his name on it. Another time his name but wrong drug. She knew the pills were wrong and double checked. Good thing she was watching.

Very bad lesson learned.

Im sorry to hear about your dog. I feel the same way and it sure would make dog owners feel better if veterinarians took the time to explain possible complications from the meds they prescribed our dogs. In my fridge I have a sealed pill of brevecto flea and tick repellent I refuse to give my dog. If anyone uses this stuff on their dog without issues I will be more than happy to give it away, just PM me.

my lab is on surolan but I never gave him as much as the vet said. A couple of treatments was all I gave him. I thought she said the surolan was for ear mites so I thought a couple of treatments was all he needed to clean out the mites.

I checked goggle and lots of people use Surolan for the pets ears with no problems but there are many listings of dogs going deaf from using it. Thanks for the heads up and I won't use it anymore but I wonder if anyone on the forum knows of a better treatment than surolan.

I think it's best to deal with them first.

Not slag em publicly yet.

Default Ya.... not a full recovery

I would say , it's been three weeks or so.... that she has about 50% hearing.
If there's wind outside... she can't hear a thing.

I have to use a louder talking voice (my teacher voice) indoors if she's within 2 meters of me and she can hear me.

The stuff I've read says it takes up to six weeks for recovery.... I dunno.

I'm crafting a letter to the vet.
We'll see how they respond.

Let the vet know that you have been on the website below and that you are thinking of filing a complaint. That will get their undivided attention.

Good luck, I hope your dog gets better and I hope your vet at least listens to your concerns.

I have goggled some of the prescriptions the family doctor has given me and then decided not to take them. You have to wonder with drugs with so many side effects why they are used.
