Probuably have-ta use the Bowtech and a 125 gr slick trick. Will see if the tag comes though. The 7mm will go along for the ride though im sure. Been waiting for this one for alot of years, what a chance to put one in the book. Too bad its lotto style though. A little tore up about that. Gonna be mighty tough to get a crew together for that one if a guy lucks out. Man power could be vital. Ive worked up there in the past, and that is a nasty piece of country and a nasty time of year to be there by yourself. Whatever works i suppose. Bring on that tag!!

Not a big game animal, so the .223 should be fine.

Not impossible the .375 with those bullets would be my choice!

Though I've been dying to take out the .416 Rigby!!

The 9.3x62 would probably do too.

Frans (too many heavy guns, not enough critters to use them on)

Cripes. You're talking a BUFFALO hunt. There's only one appropriate caliber - the one and only .45-70 Gov't

I haven't looked into it here, but are they going to specify a min cal and balistics for firearms, like in B.C. ?

Default Buffalo Hunt Jan. 1- Feb 28

Its in the Rainbow Lake and Zama areas of northern Alberta.
That time of year the daylight hours are very short, deep snow and cold !

I usually hunt alone but this might be too harsh conditions for a one guy hunt.

Assuming you shoot an animal it'll be a job to get it out.
I've got a 2 yr old 110 HP 3 cylinder POLARIS trail machine with huge pull-sled.

I think it'll be best for guys to commmuniacte and get organized with one another. Maybe spread out in the zone and communicate with cell phones. The buffalo are in herds so if a herd is located then there'll be lots of action for a few guys.

I know lots of the local truckers who'll help locating animal crossings.

I'd be happy with a yearling bull

No calibre restrictions are indicated in the regulations that I got in the mail on Friday. - I'm using a SAKO 300 Win Mag with NXS 3.5-15 x 50mm illuminated reticle for low light conditions. Bullet is either 210 Berger or 210 Wildcat

I will cast another vote for the 45-70. And furthermore, I will break down and buy a Sharps or Rolling Block rifle specially for the occasion. About the only concession I will make to modern times will be the use of a smokeless propellant and possibly a new fangled modern bullet.

Well the APA Black Mamba X1 will go with me for sure. But I was in Caroline Supplies and carressed a Sharps in 45-70 that just may have to go on my wish list.

As far as the hunt goes the lottery is the only way to go. I would have liked to see a requirement for group applications - no singles. This area and the time of year can be a deathwish. I put in with a group of 4 to minimized the danger of the hunt. Also remember that our native brothers will be alloted 200 tags and at least a month before us to fill them. Don't think there will be too many standing in the ditches by the time we get there.

Please DO NOT put in for this hunt if you are not absolutely committed to do the hunt. I know there are guys that will put in for it on a whim and then not use the opportunity. Just be careful not to take this chance from guys that WILL use it.

#1 in 450/400 although my Rigby or Lott would also be considered.
