Default ( into the wild ) elk hunt gone wrong

Got to watch a little tv today on the PVR . Jason Peterson's into the wild . He was out elk hunt and shot a big bull and could not recover it . It was shot with a rifle a week later . They shot a rib picture of the two shots . Don't seem to be that bad of a shot to me. What do you thing went wrong ?

Lung can collapse and tamponade bleeding if a major artery isn't hit. ungulate blood forms very strong clots, very quickly. And, it's an elk - probably the toughest animal in NA. Sometimes the elk gets lucky.
