Lead shot right now is about $50-$60 a bag, I think used wheel weights would be a cheaper solution maybe?

Yikes...I probably should have looked that up before buying these things. Do tire shops typically sell used wheel weights?

Anything less than $60 per bag is a deal these days.

Fill your shooting bags with hi-density polyethylene pellets. They will be a lot easier to carry and also they will be non toxic. Google them...

10lbs is about $40 and more volume than 2 bags of shot.

Another thing to consider is rice... i made my own shooting bags out of old work pant legs and simple white rice. Zip tie one end shut, fill with rice to the desired firmness, then zip tie the other end. Works perfectly and is super cheap. Just don’t get it wet. Probably costs about $2/bag

I thought about this, we've got tons of grain and canola seed kicking around. But the bags are for a lead sled so the goal is really as much weight as possible in those little 8" bags. Seeing as they're so expensive I might just go with the grain anyway...until I feel rich anyway.

If you have access to a trap club go check there. I found lead pellets stacked into little hills all over our trap club, the ants did it. An hour collecting and run it through a sieve.

A bag of sand is about $8 at the gas station, lots of weight.

Default yup

I used "Play Ground" sand in one set. Its a larger coarser grained sand. Picked up a 25 lb bag for about ten bucks at Home Depot.

My other set, I used divers belt weights,(lead) fit perfectly.

Careful you don't split your stock. Don't bolt it down, sure stock splitter.

And shortly thereafter you can order a new stock to replace the one on your rifle that spilt

Do yourself a big favour. Take the Lead Sled back for a refund. Your scope and rifle will love you for it. Get a quality rest and rear bag. If the recoil is too much for range work, get a brake installed, use that for practice and load development. Remove the brake for hunting, just make sure to check POI after removing the brake.

Exactly....best advice so far.
My bolt down advise was sarcasm, of course. Those things should never be used and the heavier you make them, the more danger to your stock(IMO). Ask the fellow on Double Rifle forum who, several years back, broke the stock on a Merkel double on his first shot. Not a cheap lesson.

Well crap, now I gotta ask. Do guys actually only buy these to absorb recoil? I just want it for load development so just a steady cradle to replace my horrible marksmanship. Maybe don’t even need the added weight of the bags.

Learn to use a good set if bags. I have a lead sled I was given. I use it as a cradle for cleaning rifles. That's about what they should be used for. A set if bags will be far better than using a a sled. Do not weigh it down much and Don t strap your gun into it. It might not break your stock. But then again it very well might.....

Sand is plenty heavy, you don't need the extra weight.

If you can't shoot well enough the lead sled isn't the answer. Get a lot more practice, start with a 22 at 100 yards. Once you can hold a two inch group, move up to a 223 and practice to 300 to 500 yards. If you can find a good shooter to shoot with, they can coach you on shooting form and process. You aren't going to have a lead sled out hunting so you need to improve your marksmanship.

Do you fellows not know what a sissy bag is? I use mine for .375 H&h and up.

It is a sandbag a bit bigger than a recoil pad, you put it between the buttstock and your shoulder.
