Default Question about registering a SKS?

I recently bought a used SKS from a private seller and I called to complete the transfer last week. It's a 7.62x39 Chinese model. I had to call to register another rifle (Savage 93R17) today and it was immediately approved. I checked on the SKS while I was on the phone and the transfer was still not approved.

Is a waiting period for approval the usual thing to happen with these type of rifles?

Is there perhaps something on the seller's end left undone? I've sold guns before but can't remember the exact process anymore.

Not that I can think of. He initiated the transfer and gave me the ref#. When I called with the ref# it was the correct rifle. I'm wondering if it's not because it's a military type rifle although it is the Chinese version without the bayonet etc? It's the first black rifle that I've ever bought.

Shoot! I'll betcha that it's classed as a Restricted weapon! The fella put a folding buttstock on the rifle.

Definition of a Restricted Firearm

According to the Criminal Code, a restricted firearm is:

A handgun that is not a prohibited firearm;
A semi-automatic, centre-fire firearm with a barrel length less than 470 mm that is not a prohibited firearm;
A firearm that can fire after being reduced, by folding, telescoping or otherwise, to an overall length of less than 660 mm; and
Any firearm prescribed under the Criminal Code regulations to be restricted (including some long guns).

Barrel length is 490mm and OAL folded is 800mm so it can't be that.

I wouldnt worry about it yet, sometimes the transfer gets reviewed and take a bit longer.

Huh, I bought and sold about a dozen rifles and this is the first time that it hasn't been immediate.

Like I said, sometimes it goes in for review. I had the same experience and it took a couple weeks before it was approved.

SKS's often get sent for review because there are a lot with duplicate serial numbers. ( Or so I've been told!)
