Default Why are my snares hard to close?

Hi everyone, I have a problem that I hope I can get some help with. I just made up 40 coyote snares ( 5/64 X 19 cables with modified cam locks). When I first made them up they were very fast to close, but I boiled them in water with some baking soda to dull them up and eliminate any scent that they may have had. Now they are very hard to close, and it takes a pretty good yank for them to shut. What can I do to solve this problem? Thanks very much for any advise, it's greatly appreciated.
