Default catching perch

Last weekend I caught a perch for the first time. It was at a lake that I fish often, where I always catch trout. The perch are illegally introduced and have been growing in there for years. It actually tasted pretty good and I'd like to try to target them. The technique I use for trout obviously isn't the best approach for the perch as this was the first one I caught in 3 years at that lake.
Any great perch techniques would be appreciated.
thanks!

Which lake is it? If there is an illegal introduction it needs to be reported...unless it is one that is already known about.

I like to put a small white jig on, and rip the tail off so it looks like a little maggot. then bait with powerbait if you want.

if the trout are stocked and the lake isnt in the alberta regs and is under the stocking program, then you cant keep any perch...

PP2 Site-Specific Regulations
The names of most lakes and major streams appear alphabetically under “PP2 Lake and Stream Listings.” Smaller streams often are not listed, but may be included in regulations as tributaries to lakes or larger streams.

LAKES

A. For Trout-Stocked Lakes, Reservoirs and Ponds in PP2 that are named under “Alberta’s Fish Stocking Program.”
Open all year – Trout limit 5; bait allowed.
All other game fish species limit 0.

dunno what lake your talking about but be sure that it isnt in the stocking program....

oh, by the way, I didnt want to sound like one of those guys on here always repeating rules and whatever. I fish this one lake around Provost that has perch and trout, and always used to think you could keep the perch, but after reading a little deeper found out that you can't. good thing im 99% catch and release

That isn't true at all.

I have caught plenty of big perch at the top of the school and when my gear finally made its way down to the bottom it was just some tiny perch.

Usually the more aggressive fish are up off of the bottom but the size isn't decided by where they are in the water column.

at snipe lake we get them off five of diamond spoons tipped with a worm a meal worm, and some maggots or a perch eye but usaly 3 of the 4 one on each treble hook. we start off by jigging at the top and moving down and when the jig touches down we give it a twitch and there on it. same thing at cow lake the bigger perch always held to the bottom. even right off the dock beside the campground

Ya I never said it couldn't happen. All I said is that it isn't true that the biggest of the school are always on the bottom.

There is alot of times where I get bigger perch off of the bottom also but there is never an "always" in fishing.

yeesh. some of your comments are appreciated...others not so much. give a person some credit please: having fished the lake 3 years yes I am aware of the regulations. Yes, fish and wildlife are aware of the illegal introduction. yes, you can take perch legally.

thanks for the tips.
