Default Pigeon Lake

I wandered around checking ice on Thursday and Prov Park end of boat launch was 5.5”.....4 steps farther out 4.5” and soft. Big cracks about 75 yds out and very wet looking. Grandview has about 6” out to about 30yds but was not good hard ice in my opinion. Large wet cracks further offshore it appeared. At Mulhurst, a crack had formed across access and appeared to heave up ice. I drilled about 5.5” off boat launch but went no farther. A couple of big wet cracks running from close to shore towards lake centre between access and Silver Beach point. Ice looks very shiny and wet around the point with binoculars. Did not venture out due to hearing ice is very thin at around 2”. Ice may start forming better with colder weather on the way as long as we don’t get a bunch off snow. Be very cautious and check ice thoroughly if heading out....

Default Coal lake ice

I’m out on Coal now on the North end. Ice is 8-9 all the way across. Caught 3 so far in 2 hrs but no keepers. Didn’t venture south of the boat launch.

I havent been up that way this week, but a week ago it was open water 100 yards off shore. I was fishing Devil's and it had 5-6", figured Lac la Nonne would be good to go... it was not.

Wabamun only froze over last week as well and everywhere I drilled yesterday had 4-5" of ice, so I imagine Lac la Nonne should be getting close to that now...

This new snow is going to screw over central area. New ice will have a lot of flood water. Kind of an opposite start to last year.

It's been a few years but I fished La Nonne, St. Anne, Isle and Pigeon lake for years and La Nonne always seem to be the last lake to get much ice. Even in the middle of winter there would only be about 16", it was always the first to have ice off in the spring as well. Not sure why but it was consistently like this for years.

yeah, it always seems to freeze over last compared to all the other lakes around. I wont be bothering fishing there this year anyways, at least not much. Wayyy too many people and there is better fishing around.

Apparently some guy had his truck parked on the ice near the launch (genius), and fishing. I’m headed out there soon and will give actual measurements.

'Preciate that, sir...heard 6" via the AB Fishing Buddies FB page, but who knows how accurate that is. Thinking about heading out there on Sunday if it's thick enough by the nursery launch...

Screws up plans for the next few weeks for sure but there wasn't much ice on the big lakes yet so I suspect this snow will flood over and turn into ice quite quickly. Think by mid-late December we will be golden on the big lakes in central AB. Subject to the fact that we don't get much more of the white stuff.

Better to get the dump of snow now then in January.

Typically around Christmas it ices over. +/- a week or 2.

That lake is never "safe" to drive on in my experience but guys typically are driving on it mid-late January. Subject to snow and pressure ridge conditions.

Ice is 4” of decent ice and 2” of slush / garbage ice. You’ll need rubber or water proof boots unless it’s a lot colder than today.
Was there for a lil over an hour and got one bite and landed a jackfish right before I had to go.

My heart sank a few times when my step would sink through the 2” of junk ice, lol.

Even at a couple spots where people had tents on, I caused it to crack and flex. I doubt it was thin or weak enough I’d go through, but seeing the air bubbles and it flex was enough for me to stay away from those spots.
